Twelve years after the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry Potter, barely clinging to his reasons for being an auror, is asked by cursebreaker Draco Malfoy, his best friend and not-so-secret crush for the last decade, to help investigate a developing case at Hogwarts. Animals are showing up dead and the ghosts are acting "weird". After some investigation, it seems the concern was all a bit alarmist until the next full moon and they've got a human victim drained of blood and essence on their hands. Before they know it, they're knee-deep in dark magic, and Harry is in a race against time to find the culprit before Draco is taken as collateral.

Harry's 5th year was probably the worst year of his life. First Voldemort happened, then Umbridge, then Voldemort AGAIN, and then Sirius died. Harry doesn't even have the time to properly mourn Sirius before he's shipped back to the Dursley's for the summer. He can't even think straight and with each passing day since losing Sirius, Harry feels more and more exhausted. By the time his 16th birthday rolls around, Uncle Vernon has to literally beat Harry just to wake him up.
After a rather brutal beating given to him by his uncle on the eve of his birthday, Harry wakes to find something he had never thought possible. He wakes up to find a long snake tail instead of his legs. A few days later, his family abandons him in some random forest.
What a wonderful way to start his 16th year of life after the worst year of his life.

Summary
This series is my Drarry canon - it explores in depth the character arch that I think Draco truly deserved. Harry, whose traumatic upbringing often goes ignored, also receives a more humane treatment from an author point of view.
In the first part, A Handful of Snakes, we discover what happened to Harry Potter and many of his friends soon after the Battle of Hogwarts, and how he came to know Draco Malfoy and become close with him. Harry and Draco's relationship does not go unnoticed by Draco's family, and it seems he will be forced to cut ties with them for good.
At the end of A Handful of Snakes it is revealed that the case of Draco's family feud is much more complex than either Harry or Draco knew to expect. The pair is forced out of their now settled-down life, and in the second part of the Alchemist Chronicle, The Lion Codex, they must embark on a mission to find out once and for all just how much they're willing to risk to stay together.- Words:

Hogwarts is the very last place that Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy want to return to after the war. The Castle feels claustrophobic and stifling. Both feel trapped within its walls.
Harry is traumatised by the war, by his sudden breakup from Ginny, and by the knowledge that his friends all know what they want to do with their life.
Meanwhile Draco is reeling. He has narrowly escaped an Azkaban prison sentence and is struggling under the strict rules of his probation. He doesn't know where his mother is, and finds himself a pariah among the other students.
The last thing that either student wants is mandatory Mind Healing. What has happened to them feels so big and devastating, that writing to a stranger feels farcical.
Even so, they are not given a choice.
Harry and Draco are both given a shared magical diary, and soon they begin writing letters to an anonymous fellow student.
Their letters, terse at first, grow longer as the days pass. Before long, each wizard confesses their secrets and their fantasies, their wishes and their dreams.

But as the two work closely together for an extended period of time, Harry starts to notice things. Outdated customs, skirting around certain subjects and intimate knowledge of rituals and spells long forgotten to the general populace.

Draco is working as a professional illustrator and calligrapher. Harry doesn’t believe Draco is still a criminal, but there’s something strange about Draco’s portfolio - and Draco never, ever lets him get a look inside it.
Author’s note: My original intention with this fic was to write a bit of fluff about Draco doodling Harry’s name in his notebook, and what came out was a snarky, slow burn case fic and something close to an artistic manifesto. I like this better.
