    Summary

There was a new scientist in the lab.

Nicholas had fixated on him the moment he entered, wearing a white coat like all the other techs, but sporting a bright red shirt underneath. He stood out among the dull whites and blacks and grays that filled the space beyond the thick glass of Nicholas’s tank. Golden hair and round tinted glasses with eyes the same shade as the tropical seas Nicholas had once called home glittering behind them. He was a splash of color in an otherwise dull world.

    ----

Wolfwood has been an experiment in Conrad's lab for years when a new scientist changes everything.

    Summary

    “You’ve never?” Vash asks.

“Don’t make me say it,” Wolfwood says, “Where the fuck would I, anyway?”

Vash turns this over in his head, fingers tapping against the sheets. “It wouldn’t be a terrible idea,” he says, finally, “Not if — not if we wanted to.”

“We?” Wolfwood asks, his body shifts minutely, arms relax ever so slightly.

    “Yeah,” Vash breathes, “We.”

Wolfwood lays there in complete silence for longer than is really comfortable, Vash practically holding his breath from the anticipation.

Finally, Wolfwood makes a noise of frustration and sits up completely, turning the light on the bedside table on.

Vash blinks in the light, not a physical response but one that he’s learned makes it less unnerving for other people. Wolfwood is sitting up, staring at him, the blankets pooled around his hips. Vash tries not to stare, bringing his eyes back up to Wolfwood’s face.

“Okay,” Wolfwood says, “I want you to say that again, but where I can fucking see you this time.”

“We could,” Vash replies immediately, “If you want to.”

    Summary

“Are you drunk?” Vash asks, eyes caught on the blurry moon.

“Nah,” Wolfwood says. Vash doesn’t know whether or not to believe him. “What were ya lookin’ at? Geranium?”

“Huh?” Vash is somehow turned towards Wolfwood again. At his wet lips around the crumpled cigarette. He hasn’t shaved in a few days, so the scruff around his jaw is a little shaggier than usual. He’s growing a bit of a mustache, too, a soft curl over his upper lip.

Wolfwood points his cigarette towards the sky, casting trails of smoke through the air.

“Our constellation. Don’t tell me ya forgot.”

Vash knows he's a dark mark on humanity's timeline. Wolfwood keeps making him forget.

    Summary

“So…” He starts, unreasonably curious. “Are you, like, a fertility Plant, or—”

“Oh my god, shut up.” Vash groans. “I’m not telling you anything else. I just—things are different for me. Here. I don’t even know. I’m like,” he presses his forehead into Nicholas, “going insane.”

Nicholas rubs his hand down Vash’s back. “Can I help somehow?”

    “You can die.”

After stumbling upon a geo plant, Nicholas learns several things about Vash in quick succession. Namely, the reason for that sweet, floral scent that drives him crazy.

    Summary

"You are so annoying," Nicholas grumbles, but he leans over so Vash can pluck the cigarette from his hand. The fingers of Vash's metal arm are warm, as if they've been absorbing the heat of the suns all day and are reluctant to let it go. Vash lifts the cigarette to his mouth and Nicholas braces himself for a fit of coughing and choking, but Vash just inhales smoothly and exhales without a hitch in his breath, seeming to savor the smoke on his tongue.

"Not bad," Nicholas says grudgingly, and Vash gives him a lazy smile.

"You think I've never had one of these before?" he says, lifting the cigarette to his mouth again. "Come on, Wolfwood. What else do you think I've never done?"

Just because Nicholas has never seen Vash smoke doesn't mean he doesn't know how. Maybe there are a lot of things like this.
