Merlin felt the truth of it in his bones. He wanted to kill the old man for it.
“I’ll be back,” Merlin said. “You know I will. And I’ll remember, even when you don’t.”
Merlin woke in the woods, made sure Arthur was breathing, killed Morgana, and summoned Kilgharrah. He reached Avalon, bargained with the Sidhe, summoned Freya, tried everything he could think of. When it didn’t work, he killed himself, woke in the woods, and tried again.

Merlin cannot die. When he does, he wakes up at the beginning of the day of his death. Merlin cannot die, and he won't let Arthur die either.

After the Disir, displeased with Merlin's decision, take his magic from him, he is struggling to keep Arthur safe. When they are ambushed on a hunting trip, Merlin finds himself taken prisoner and with Mordred of all people as his cell mate. He soon understands that he has no choice but to trust the man he wanted dead to free them and warn Camelot of imminent danger.

The knights find Merlin dead near their campsite and discover his secret as a result. What they don't know is that Merlin is still there.

Arthur presses a kiss to the bite, licks at the blood that’s spilt, tongue wet and warm on his skin. Merlin relaxes at the touch, despite his heart continuing to pound. “It’ll be alright,” Arthur soothes, voice little more than a whisper.
But what he doesn’t know — what Merlin knows — and he knows — is that there haven’t been any witches; there aren’t any spurned lovers. He slides his hand from Arthur’s, letting his thumb press into the prince’s wrist. Perhaps it was inspired by his own feelings, but Merlin knows — this was his magic’s work, and his magic’s work alone.
