Summary
It shouldn't have happened this way. He was returning from his summer in the UK, waiting out the last few months before his 18th birthday, and then he'd be free to give his parents the space they wanted. To stop being a burden on the people in his life.
Of course life is out to make things worse. Ranboo screws up in a multitude of ways and his best friend's family has to pick up the pieces.
Or: many things go wrong for Ranboo, but he's stupid for thinking that people don’t want to be there for him.

They wanted to punch Wilbur and see him bleed. No. No. Nope. Can’t do that. What’d their therapist say again? “Find something better to do with your free time instead of making me feel like a stranger to my own damn family.”
With all of his audacity, Wilbur cooed. At Techno. Like they were a child. “Aw, is little Techie getting his feelings hurt?” The condescending tone, the nickname everyone abandoned after Tommy turned eleven, and the pout on Wilbur’s stupid, stupid face made everything so much worse. He dropped it all in just a second, going back to the shiteating grin he’d had before. “You know we’re only joking right, no need to get so sensitive over it.”
or; Techno’s siblings are being assholes and so are Ranboo’s parents. They bond during their families’ instability.

Summary
Ranboo lived in the sort of household that you would call old-fashioned, maybe a little strict and closed-minded. Not in the way you might think, though. They accepted everyone and everybody, but when it came to second genders they closed off. Ranboo grew up like this, with a only a few pieces of a world everyone around him was slipping into eagerly and without his parents' hesitation. What were they so afraid of?
Now you can only imagine what suddenly going to the UK for four months—away from home for the first time—would be like. Meeting up with his friends was going to be awesome, amazing and most importantly fun! However, when you put three adults in charge of three instinct-filled pups there’s only one way to go: off the rails. Coupled with the fact one of the pups' second gender instincts are just coming out, this trip wasn’t at all going to be tame.
The game is chaos and they're all playing to win. Ranboo never thought this meet up could be so life-changing. He had never thought of how it would thrust him into the world he'd been so persistently shielded from for so long.
