"The Agni Kai is a sacred ritual," the Sage says loftily. "A religious rite to choose the most worthy of two competitors. The victor is blessed by Agni, our all-knowing divinity of fire. Prince Zuko was struck down, but the religious rite continued when you decided to enter the Agni Kai."
"I mean, I didn't exactly decide—" Katara begins, but the Sage holds up a wrinkled hand.
"You took Prince Zuko's place. And you were the victor."
Zuko's shoulders stiffen. A strange ringing fills Katara's ears. Surely not…
"You would be, by divine right," says the Sage to Katara, "the new Fire Lord."
...
Or: By Fire Nation law, in order for Zuko to have the throne after Katara wins the Agni Kai, she has to marry into the royal family.

Summary
Katara knew grief. Her life has been a long conversation with grief, one that began too early and never truly ended. But the end of the war was supposed to be the end of suffering. All the pain, all the loss, the heartbreak and nightmares should have been worth it for peace.
Standing in front of the burning pyre of the man she loved, Katara realized that there could never be peace for her — not now, not ever. The world had already taken everything from her.
But Katara was a fighter, Katara was a warrior. She would not beg the world for mercy. She would take what was owed, by grace or by ruin. And if her soul must burn upon the altar of justice, then so be it. After all, it was already broken.

What if Katara actually told her friends about Aang kissing her?
Flames curled around the firepit, illuminating everyone's faces, dancing lines across their skin. Silence was in the air, the crackling from the burning embers almost echoed against the house behind them.
Katara was conflicted, glaring into the flames. Not only did the play highlight her in the worst way possible, target all of her insecurities at once, but it also caused the most uncomfortably awkward moment between her and Aang. Said boy now sat across from her, his grey eyes burning into her skin. She pretended not to notice, her gaze permanently glued to the flames.

Summary
Braids and knots are a way of life in the Water Tribes. They use them to make cordage, nets, and traps, but they also use them in their art—and in their hair. Katara knows braids, and using her skill sets to help others is what she does. It’s who she is.
Which totally explains why she is currently sitting on her hands as she watches Zuko try to hold a council meeting with his hair in his eyes.
It's because she's a good friend who wants to use her skills to help out, and not because she's been itching to sink her fingers into Zuko's gorgeous Fire Nation hair for weeks... right?
