A brutal counteroffensive on the Day of Black Sun alters the trajectories of Zuko and Katara's fates, changing their lives forever.
This work delves deeply into the world of Avatar, staying true to much of the source inspiration while taking liberties so as to age it up and break down so many of those amazing themes and questions brought up in the show. Specific focus on trauma, guilt, and PTSD; on the moral gray area that war creates and the inevitability of having to do the hard thing over the right thing. Early chapters set the framework, but later chapters are some of my best writing.
Sprawling, long-form character study (mainly 3rd person, with 1st person flashbacks).
Rated M (read tags). Ignore AO3—work first published in August 2022.

She thinks it will end once they reach the city, but in a place crowded with millions of refugees, and stuck in the Lower Ring, she doesn’t have much hope of finding the others. With no leads and nowhere else to go, she resolves to wait for her friends to find her.
But in their cramped apartment, days turn into weeks, and Zuko and Katara begin to settle into something that almost feels like domestic bliss. It isn’t real. Or at least, it isn’t meant to be. But the longer they stay, the harder it becomes to remember where the act ends and something real begins.

I'm just posting one of my dusty google doc drafts of an idea that I didn't expand. Refer to the notes for my relative idea of what I wanted to happen.
In short, Zuko is angsty as per usual because he doesn't think that he is worthy to be who he was before the war. Canon divergence from when he was challenged by Ozai in the agni kai and was presumed dead by everyone after, but was just kept as a prisoner by Ozai.

Celine had had more than her fair share of trauma. She supposed it was an unavoidable aspect of the life of a Hunter and she handled it the best she could. She had spent years fighting soul-sucking abominations, raised the half-demon baby of her dead best friend and saw that very same daughter nearly turning to demon-hood in a fit of rage. But rarely did something come close to shake her as much as what she saw that evening in Rumi’s room.
