Her mind goes blank, her vision clouds with a tint of maroon, and she’s suddenly all too aware of Enid grasping her left arm. Watching the girl’s movements was like witnessing a train wreck in slow motion. She whirled around enthusiastically, but her foot caught on a bucket, throwing her off balance. In a desperate attempt to stabilize herself, she grabbed for a broomstick, which promptly toppled over. Her last resort for support was me—or more specifically, my tie.
This might have worked, if not for the sudden shift in weight and my lack of readiness, which led us to the position we’re in now: Enid sprawled on the floor with her back against the door, wincing as she rubs her ribs where she must have hit something. She still clutches my tie in one hand, while I straddle her, hands on either side of her, my face barely an inch from hers
