An AU where Splinter had indeed escaped with all the turtles, but Baron Draxum wasn't going to stop searching for his life's work. He tracks the family down after several years, but is only able to reclaim one of the specimens. Donatello. He wasn't the ideal one, but he would do. The boy would become the perfect warrior, defender of yokai. All that there is to do is get rid of those pesky memories, so he won't keep crying for his brothers.

Summary
Donnie goes to college, but not in New York like the rest of his family. He goes to a different state, where he encounters old enemies. The Purple Dragons and The Krang. Only the Purple Dragons are much nicer people now and some might have a thing for Donnie. Oh, and the Krang have led to several students going missing and are attempting to open the portal again.
Meanwhile, back home, even before Donnie left, the family had secrets. It was only natural, with them all being young adults. They all did things their dads didn't approve of. Mikey graffitied across the city. Donnie smoked. Leo had a boyfriend. Raph got himself beat up constantly on the streets. But with Donnie gone things start to splinter apart.

At this point, he just wants his family. He could care less about being a hero.
Things during the invasion don't go as planned. Donnie got stuck in the Technodrome, Raph never woke up after defeating his Krang infection, and Leo is stuck in the prison dimension. All Mikey wants is to get his family back, no matter the toll it takes on him. His brothers keep pulling hero moves and sacrificing themselves, so it's all he can do to pull one himself.
But he really wishes they would just stop.

Donnie knows he isn't the same as his brothers. That isn't a problem. He's fine being different, once he accepted being different. The thing is, he isn't sure they ever accepted it. And none of his tech accomodations can change the way they think. (Well, technically they can. Donnie tried that once and it did not work out.)
But after a particularly bad fight, Donnie decides that he's done. If his brothers can't work with him, he can work alone. Being a hero is the only thing he's ever needed to be. It's certainly easier than trying to be a brother. One forced to forgive and accept mistakes that are never really resolved. Why should he move on if they never learn? They only learn the hard way, and he knows it.
So he's going to make them learn.

Gotta save Donnie. So he moves as quickly as he can. He is a fast drone. Nearly won at the drone races, after all. Donnie had saved him then. Donnie had given Shelldon life to begin with. And Shelldon would do anything to return the favor.
