Then a great wound opened before them with a harrowing sound, soil and rock splitting apart. Never had Neuvillette seen anything like it in his life, and as much as it terrified him, he was awed.
In one swift motion, arms were swept under Neuvillette’s shoulders and knees and he was lifted from the ground. Neuvillette gasped in surprise, clinging to the cloak around Wriothesley’s broad shoulders. With a long stride, Wriothesley carried them to the edge of the great fissure, where a strange chariot awaited its driver.
“Hold fast to me,” Wriothesley said as he took the reins.
Neuvillette turned back toward the earth above, watching the angry skies as the opening in the earth sewed itself shut once more.
