A story following a different outcome of Neocolai's Fear the Soulless, Wraiths and Night (but never fear me):
In which Gil-Galad reacts to Elrond's attempted waterfall jump more physically than he intends to, striking Elrond without a second thought. Having lost so much family to the silmarils Elrond understands now that fate would have the rings steal his friends, as well.
He sees no point in watching Middle Earth's downfall play out.

When Elrond tries to follow the same reckless flight as his mother, Gil-Galad snatches him away from the falls and his hand moves without thought.
For the first and only time he strikes his herald.
Shaken by this loss of control, Gil-Galad confines Elrond to his quarters until he can address him in a more rational mindset. Furthermore, he commands the guards to ensure he does not neglect his health until he is summoned.
They follow his orders implicitly.

Galadriel must devise three trials to put Sauron through to prove he is worthy of redemption - and failure is not an option. After the first two trials were less than a success, Galadriel has to pull out all the stops for the third and she does not like it, at all. For the third trial will not only test Sauron but her as well. Because for this most crucial one, she will have to live through a time where when Sauron asks her to join him, she tells him yes.
