Summary
Will experiences the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) after the loss of his brother Jonathan. This fic basically goes thru how his grief impacts his relationships with others as well as his view of himself and the world. yeah this is pretty depressing. lowk vent fic?? idk if i can call it that but idrc. this characterisation of Will might not necessarily be one you agree with and i totally get that, but i think it makes a lot of sense. oh yeah this completely disregards most of what happened canonically in s5. have fun y'all stay safe

Summary
It's late October of 1987—over a year since the death of Vecna—and Will Byers' trauma anniversary is steadily approaching. When you spend every day with someone, it's easy to notice even the tiniest of abnormalities in their behavior, and Mike Wheeler is no exception to this phenomenon. Will begins to feel haunted again, and Mike seems to be the only thing keeping him afloat in this vast sea of dredged up memories. Everyone chalks Will's melancholia up to the dreaded November 6th approaching, but could it be something more?
Or
Mike is worried that Vecna could be back and messing with Will again. They grow closer as Will confides in Mike and he realizes some (very gay) things about himself.

The plan was simple.
Get Will close to the gate at Lover’s Lake.
Let Eleven piggyback into the hive mind.
Find Max. Find Holly. Bring them home.
The plan was simple and it still went to shit.
Now Will, El, and Max are forced to rely on what remains of Henry Creel to help them navigate the labyrinth of memories to escape the Hive Mind.
Joyce and Hopper have now lost both of their sons to the Upside Down, but this time they're taking matters into their own hands.
Nancy has now lost the two people she's been pushing away, and is forced to face the devastating reality of the independence she's asserted.
And the boys are forced to come together in order to find the long-dormant answers held within their party's quietest members.
Old wounds resurface, truths long avoided come into focus, and the question none of them are ready to answer begins to take shape:
What happens when the only way to save the world is to understand the ones who broke it open?

“Are you all right?” Mike asked, before handing him something. “You left your coat.”
“Yeah,” Will breathed out, offering Mike a small smile as he took it. “Yeah. Are you- Did you and El finish?” He's horrible at small talk, but the awkward silence was too much to bear even for him.
“Yeah,” Mike replied, an awkward smile on his lips,
“Cool.”
“Cool.”
Will huffed out a laugh. He hadn't expected Mike to check on him, but at least their stiffness was something he predicted. Despite that, he feels a little better. Not happy, not quite calm either, but still, maybe even pleasantly so.

Summary
He opened their door, and the grin on his face quickly faded. Mike was sitting at his desk, arms crossed. The look on his face said that he was Pissed.
“What the hell, Will?” He asked, gesturing wildly with his hands in the way he only did when he was truly angry.
“What?”
“Don’t give me that bullshit, Will. Why the fuck did you move my notes? I went to study, and I brought the wrong fucking papers because you messed with my shit. Why the fuck would you put papers crumpled up on the ground right next to my drafts for my essay? You made me look fucking stupid in front of what could’ve been new friends. You know how fucking dumb I looked when I handed them writing about my DND character instead of our assignment?” His voice was getting louder and louder as he spoke, and Will shrank under the barrage.
“I- I’m sorry. I didn’t realize-”
“Didn’t realize what, Will? That you can’t just mess with other people’s shit without asking?”
Or: Mike follows Will to California for college, and, obviously, they decide to room together. Everything is going well until Will starts moving Mike's things without asking.

Summary
Will’s brain basically short-circuits. He doesn't even need to turn around to know who it is. Even after six years of radio silence, his body still possesses this fucked-up muscle memory when it comes to Mike Wheeler.
He forces himself to look up.
And fuck. It is Mike. Standing right there just inside the patio.
He’s taller than Will remembers, which is saying something. The gangly and slightly awkward teenager Will had spent years trying to scrub from his memory is completely gone. His dark hair is longer from last he saw him, curling damply against his neck from the autumn drizzle outside. There’s a permanent shadow of stubble along his jawline, totally erasing any lingering softness from when they were kids. It’s almost unfair how strikingly handsome he got.
The worst part, though, is his eyes. They lock directly onto Will’s, blown wide with shock.
OR Will spent years trying to freeze Mike out of his system. But as they stand together in the empty, 4 AM chill of the rink, crushed under the heavy weight of Mike's unwavering stare, Will realizes the ice isn't the thing that's going to destroy him this time.

Summary
Goosebumps prickle up his arms. He shivers, pulling the blankets higher. Something brushes against the folds of his mind, like a whisper. Old memories pry open like poorly healed wounds. An ever present reminder of who he really is.
You'll never be like them, William.
Will's body locks. Eyes wide, breath shallow. He strains his ears. Something ghostly skims the back of his neck. A chill.
The words die off into inaudible whispers. With bated breath, Will waits for it to return. Nothing does.
Stiffly, he rolls onto his side and curls his body tight. He's hallucinating. Imagining things.
A cold caress touches his cheek, disgustingly familiar. The whisper presses against his mind one last time, insistent. Deliberate.
William…
Three months after the bridge collapse, when Hawkins begins to rebuild and things feel normal again, something starts stirring in the recesses of Will's mind. Shadows start lingering just a little too long. Sometimes his skin feels wrong. Thoughts that are not his own creep in during silence.
He soon finds out what Vecna meant when he said Will was a vessel. What Will was made for.

Will hesitated, his hands smeared with dirt. He hadn’t thought this far ahead. His planning had stopped at the getting-out-of-the-house-unnoticed-and-digging-him-up phase. But, now he thought about it, human heads didn’t just open like boiled eggs, did they?

In 1983, Will came back from the Upside Down not dead, but not exactly alive either. Five years on, in the middle of a Hawkins overrun by the Upside Down, it's getting harder and harder to hide that everyone who'd called him Zombie Boy had been absolutely right.

Summary
The first time Will felt that something was seriously wrong with him, he did what he thought was best, which is absolutely nothing. It was hands-down the worst decision he’d ever made, and considering how his life turned out, that was saying something.
If he’d just opened his mouth, said something—anything—it might’ve saved him from being possessed for the next year and a half.
Or
November 6, 1987. Will Byers disappears for seven days, then comes back alive but possessed. Mike takes his sweet time connecting the dots, but once he does, he’s definitely not okay with this information.

Summary
“Sorry!” He shouts over the noise, smiling while Will bluescreens. He’s gorgeous, all big brown eyes and a strong nose and his dark hair curling around his ears, messy and just begging to have fingers run through it. Will feels his fingers itching with the need to draw and paint him over and over again until it sticks, the way he’s never felt when RISD would bring in models for them to paint to practice their details. Will had always been bored when they had those lessons, but now he wishes the school had hired this guy: he would’ve gotten the best grade. “Um, this is yours, right?”
“Yeah! Yeah, sorry.” Will drops his second pen onto his sketchbook, grabbing the other one from him and mentally wincing at the thought of how dirty it must be. Gross. “You here for the band?”
Amusement lights up the guy's eyes. “Yeah, you could say that.” He smirks, looking around for the bartender. She’s helping a group on the other side so it’ll be a minute before he’s noticed. “Are you here for the band?”

Summary
“Why did you punch him?” Mike asked, his voice getting stronger, putting the last pad down on the edge of the bathroom sink. He turned back towards Will, still sitting on the edge of the tub. Their eyes met again. “You’ve never fought before.”
And Will couldn't do anything but stay quiet and look away again (avoid, avoid, avoid–)
Mike sighed, clearly getting frustrated. “Come on, Will, talk to me. What's going on with you?”
He tried to catch his eyes, dipping in front of him to get into Will’s view, but he stubbornly kept his eyes away, down towards the ground. He didn’t really know why. He just– couldn’t. The cold of the bathtub seeped into his gripping hands.
“It’s nothing,” he bit out through clenched teeth.
“I don't believe that.”
“I’m fine, I can manage.”
“I don’t think breaking someone's nose is ‘managing it’, but okay.”
Or: In a quiet, vulnerable moment in the Wheelers' basement bathroom, an unknown anger courses through Will's body.

Summary
My skin is clean, Will tells himself, staring down his reflection as if it’s challenging him. I’m not possessed, I’m not in the Upside Down.
I’m a second-year student at the Art Institute of Chicago. My apartment is shitty and tiny and expensive and incredible. Will stabilizes himself by gripping the countertop, looping the words through his mind. Mike is in the other room, waiting for me. He’s an English major at Loyola, and his dad has no idea how he’ll land a job. He’s waiting for me. He loves me. He’s patient with me, and he understands. My brother lives in New York, and my mom’s safe at home in Indiana. My skin is clean, and all of this is real.
I disappeared seven years ago today, and I was found.
And he’s dead, and far away from me. He can’t touch me ever again.
