Summary
It’s just a second - a flicker of acknowledgement - but what causes him to pause is that it’s the ordinariness that makes it out of the ordinary.
What makes *him* out of the ordinary.
This person in blue jeans and a cotton-blend button down looking at David like he’s Raphael’s lost “Portrait of a Young Man.”
Well, fuck.
Poor thing looks like a little guppy in a sea of couture sharks. An adorable guppy, but one that could get eaten with a change in the tide all the same. He has to meet him. And he has no idea why.

Summary
“What are you doing here?”
Patrick blinks beneath the toque shoved onto his head, steadily dripping melting snow from his coat onto the mat they once purchased together. “Um… it’s my weekend."
What? David is already shaking his head, but Patrick takes a step forward, eyes wide, skin pale despite his cold-flushed cheeks.
“I get Christmas. You get New Years. I thought..." Patrick trails off and licks his lips. Behind him, snow blows in through the still-open doorway. "I thought that's what we agreed."
Or, the exes-stuck-in-a-cabin fic I wrote totally and completely for myself.

“Would you have picked me up in a bar, if I'd been there back when you were looking for randoms?” Patrick asks, pupils blown wide. “I’ve never done that before, I don’t even know what it would be like, but. I can imagine. I'd want it.”
or, David has some idle talents; Patrick has some fantasies that would put them to use.

Summary
The thing is, Christmas was nine days ago.
Christmas was nine days ago, and New Year’s was two days ago, and the holiday season is truly and well over, and Patrick still hasn’t taken down his decorations.
Which, beyond any shadow of a doubt, is incorrect, thankyouverymuch.OR

Summary
Dinner was purposeful torture with long heated looks in low candlelight, feet and ankles slotted together as fingertips brushed atop the waxy wood table while they nibbled on mediocre pasta. It had been David’s suggestion to get out of town, have a date night free of wedding planning and talk of the store.

Summary
"I'm sure Patrick has some stamps here at the store that you can use to send in your registration."
David's eyes are wide when they briefly meet his. "I can't ask P— I can't just use store supplies for personal use, Alexis!"
Patrick wonders if David realizes that he used the printer for his mood board for Jocelyn's shower, or that he takes pens home all the time. Hell, that he thinks he can just damage out a eucalyptus eye serum and ask Patrick to gently apply it to his face…
He shuts down the memory.
But what makes this different? That they're exes (god, it still stings) now and this is for a singles event?
"No worries," Patrick forces himself to say, keeping his voice carefully easy. "It's just a stamp, David."
But before he leaves for the night, Patrick counts the stamps on the sheet in his desk, because he's a masochist, apparently.

Summary
He decides it’s the freckle.
The one just above David’s ass, to the right of his spine.
It’s a perfect circle and it teases the edge of the right dimple at David’s lower back; they’ve just recently become intimately acquainted. Patrick loves to thumb over that perfect, sacred spot repeatedly—a silent promise on the occasions so far that he’s had the opportunity to bury himself deep in David’s impossible heat, his perfect body spread out before him. He traces over it again and again with the rhythm of his hips, and presses bruisingly when he comes.
That’s the spot he will miss the most.

Summary
Patrick follows David to his room closely and wordlessly, a very guilty shadow, and sits on the end of Alexis’s bed and tells him about Rachel and watches him with those sincere brown eyes that could make David do almost anything. David stands with his back to the bathroom door, arms crossed protectively around his body and feet planted firmly, but he still has this sensation in his stomach like he’s falling, the telltale hypnic jerk he sometimes gets lying in bed at night, but constant—an unrelenting, nauseating swoop deep in his diaphragm.
There are two Patricks now—the one whose ass David has eaten and the one who grew up holding Rachel’s hand.
After the barbecue, David takes the week to try to understand the people he and Patrick have become thanks to their relationships—old and new.

Summary
“I was going to propose, you know,” he whispers. “I bought the rings and everything. I asked for Stevie’s blessing.”
David wipes at his eyes and laughs, a little hoarse. “And what did she say?”
“She said if I did anything to hurt you she would make sure I didn’t live to do it again,” A fond smile crosses Patrick’s face at the memory. “But she clearly didn’t follow through.”
“Huh,” David laughs, and it sounds hollow. “What a bitch.”

Summary
Patrick’s never had a boyfriend before and there’s something he really likes about no-one knowing that, about having this tiny secret about himself that he gets to learn about with no-one else sticking their nose in. No-one knows that he’s figuring this out a little bit at a time as he goes, learning how to be the smaller person in a hug, how to remember to tilt his chin up for kisses. No-one’s looking at him to see how he touches a man, no-one’s comparing it to the way he used to touch women. No-one knows how different it feels, how being pressed shoulder to knee with David in a booth at the Wobbly Elm makes his entire body feel like it’s on fire.
