After the fall of Prime, Etheria and the universe are able to experience peace for the first time. The war is over, but frustratingly Adora's body isn't getting the memo. After knowing nothing but life as a soldier for so long, she finds herself still reacting to everyday situations with the sense of urgency of someone at war. She can only feign being okay for so long before she ultimately has to accept help dealing with the effects of trauma, but admitting she has a problem will mean acknowledging that being a hero has done her more harm than good. (Slightly angsty fic about healing, will have a happy ending I promise)

“I miss you too. So, so, much.” The words are wholly inadequate for what Adora’s gone through but she doesn’t want to make Catra feel any worse than she already does.
Catra lets out a watery laugh. “Whose bright idea was this, anyway?”
Adora’s smile wobbles but she laughs with her. “Yours, genius.”
Adora will never forget the day Catra asked her if they could take a break. It had been a few days after she accepted her seat in FZ University for her 18-month Master’s program.
It was a warbled request in between a long rant about how couples grow to resent each other in long distance relationships. How they both owed it to each other to grow as people and make sure they weren’t one of those high school sweethearts that grew to hate each other right after they got married.
She couldn’t believe it then, sitting on Catra’s bed as her soon-to-be ex-girlfriend looked at her nervously. Adora had been looking at train schedules to figure out how often she could visit, but Catra was on a whole other page. One that didn’t have her written into it.

“My eyes are up here, princess.” Catra says, her ears twitching in amusement.
“I wasn’t—! It’s the necklace!” She huffs. She tackles Catra into the wall, but the brunette is ready for it. She slips out of Adora’s grasp, ducking around her.
She runs after Catra, holding back a grimace while running with her heels. She’s dealt with worse, but not by much. Catra is fast, but Adora doesn’t fall far behind until they finally get to the balcony where there’s nowhere for her to hide.
“Why are you messing with homecoming?” Adora hisses as she lands another punch when Catra turns around, realizing she doesn’t have any other options. “Can’t you let anyone have anything nice for a change?”
Catra pins her to the ground, shoving Adora down. She pants to catch her breath, looking up at Catra who’s holding her down with her strong thighs. She doesn’t think anything of it until Catra leans down, pressed flush against her.
“I’m plenty nice, princess.” The words and Catra’s breath feathering over her ear leave Adora in a tailspin she’s never felt before, least of all with a villain like Catra.

She hears a soft thud and whipped her head up, a small squeak of surprise passing her lips. Catra relaxes when she realizes it was the window washer.
The woman’s eyes were so expressive—it’s like they’re yelling, are you ok?
Catra purses her lip and plops her head to rest on her hand, looking out at the attractive woman. She makes a show of rubbing her eyes tired and then making a frown upset.
The other woman frowns in return, one of her hands tight on her harness and the other searching the bucket at her hip. She pulls out her brush and Catra turns back to her computer, trying to make sense of the few notes she’s been given access to, until she hears another knock at the window.
The corners of her lips involuntarily turn up as she sees the smiley face drawn into the foam.

That last thing she expected from Adora was for her to jump in her truck as if the last few months hadn't happened.
"I mean—yeah." Her face is red as she fumbles over her words. "We can't let DT win."
For a moment, Catra really lets herself take Adora in. She's flush from all the stomping around she's been doing, the indignant curl to her lips not quite gone. She looks like she has a chip on her shoulders—like she can't leave this unaddressed. More than that though, she seems soft underneath it all. Probably for the first time in months.
Catra remembers when she wouldn't think twice about Adora standing up to an asshole like DT for her. When she would never question why she did it. When her gut wouldn't be whirling with doubts and apprehensions.
But this is a chance. A chance to ride off and chase a tornado with Adora again. Something that even twenty minutes ago felt impossible.
Even if she never gets Adora back the way she wants, at least she can have this.

Adam's stride quickens as he gets a clear direction and it makes it hard for Adora to keep up in her heels. She's about to whisper to him to slow down when she catches sight of the woman he's making a beeline toward.
Adora's heart beats too loudly in her chest and she feels like she might throw up right there in front of every upper class Bright Mooner.
It's her. It has to be her. She's older, changed in many ways but Adora would know Catra anywhere and any time. Her face is in a polite smile that doesn't reach her eyes, the kind she used to give to Adora's friends in Eternia whenever she ran into them.
But it's the same rounded cheeks Adora remembers. The same eyes—one melted gold and the other a vibrant blue—that Adora spent hours upon hours staring into. The same lips that Adora kissed more times than she could count, the ones she'd whispered broken promises into in the middle of the night.

Adora fights the urge to open her eyes, leaning her head against Catra's shoulder to be safe. "You aren't a monster, Catra." She whispers it ardently, hoping her voice says what her gaze can't.
Catra runs her claws through Adora's hair, gently stroking it. "It feels that way sometimes." Her sigh is forlorn. "You know, eye contact is so intimate. And the only time I've had it with someone since I was cursed, it's just to see life leave their eyes."

Adora rolls her eyes and puts her hands on Catra’s shoulders, stilling her. She lets her hand trace over the fine chains that drape over Catra’s collarbones. Her eyes are drawn to an impossible spot—an empty space on Catra’s shirt, where there’s only fabric.
Only, in Adora’s vision, the one she had when she thought she was dying at the Heart, that same spot held Adora’s Bright Moon pin. She still doesn’t quite know what it means to exchange tokens like that—she hasn’t had the right opportunity or the courage to ask anyone yet—but she knows it makes her gut clench, both in excitement and fear.
The brilliance of her joy dims the uncertainty that drips beneath—the errant thought that no matter what it might mean for Adora to give Catra her Bright Moon pin, she’ll hardly be deserving of it.
She feels a soft hand on her own shoulder, and she looks up to find a curious gaze. “Ready to go, princess?”
Adora smiles and nods, tamping down the funny feeling she gets when she thinks too much about how lucky she is to be alive and for the war to be over. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

Catra quietly does as she's asked, wincing as she elevates her leg. Then she looks at Adora, unclear what will happen now. She has a plan but now it feels silly in the face of how clearly upset Adora is. She's not sure what else she expected.
"Catra, why are you here?" Adora's arms are crossed over her chest, and she looks anything but happy to see her.
Catra feels her gut drop to her toes under Adora's searching gaze. "Surprised to see me?"
Adora scoffs angrily. "Yeah, I don't expect my ex-girlfriend to just show up out of the blue in the middle of a snowstorm."
It's a good thing that Adora turns around in that moment because Catra has no idea what her face looks like.
