He might or might not have been repeating Dan’s name. Hard to say, really, it was muffled, and Herbert only scoffed in disdain when asked about it later on. Dan assumes it was supposed to serve as an answer, though it did not actually answer anything. Herbert is quite adamant about not needing Dan’s pity, except for the times when Dan’s pity turns out to be convenient.

Nothing he hasn’t seen before, of course, but it never feels right to look on these nights. He waits until he hears the slip of water lapping at the rim of the tub, followed by Vince’s tell-tale sigh when the water climbs his chest. Then, Howard slips off the toilet and turns, sitting on the bathmat with his back pressed to the cold porcelain edge of their clawfoot tub.

If you asked Richie to name the three people least likely to be handling the animal talent on this set, he would say Sandra Day O’Connor, Mike Tyson, and Eddie Kaspbrak. All preposterously out of place, and all uniquely intimidating. But he swivels around in the makeup chair, takes two steps, and there he is, his Eddie, with a furry monstrosity heaped in his arms like a museum with no coat check, milling around by Camera 2. Here we go: initiating Jell-o spine! Locking knees into position! Dumping sweat reserves to palms in three, two, one! With any luck Richie will shoot through the roof at an angle that crash lands in the ocean. Then the cat hisses at a boom op, and Eddie shushes it with a withering scowl so familiar Richie breaks out in a snorting giggle he hasn’t had genuine access to since he was a snotnosed kid. Not in decades. Not since Eddie declined to take their little double act from radio to the screen, and Richie went ahead without him.
