It’d be a different kind of distance, though, in this theoretical situation.

Robert pauses just in the doorway out of the kitchen, frowning. What the hell was Waterboy doing calling in? Everyone was dismissed hours ago.
Robert clicks the little button on the headset. “Waterboy? What’s up?”
Only then does he start slowly making his way back to his desk. The lights are all off, save for the lamp at the corner of his desk, and the warm, dim glow does nothing to help his exhaustion. “W–uh. Hey! Robert, yes–yeah. So I’m just. Well, I-I have a sort of, you know, situation.”
OR Robert's trying to finish up some late-night assignments. Waterboy is a disaster. It works out for them.

Summary
Truly, there was no denying how handsome Pliskin was. He was suave, the unshaven look was good on him, the stray strands of hair falling on his face, the raspiness of his voice that rumbled like the sound of thunder.
He’s so much like Snake that Hal can’t even look at him without thinking about what he doesn’t have. He wants Snake- he wants David back. Pliskin has such a different personality from Snake that Hal feels desperate to find his partner in the closest thing that looks like him.
Or, an Otasune cliche where Snake and Otacon roleplay with the Pliskin persona
