It was, he justifies, practically a life or death situation. It's entirely understandable that in the face of the mission stakes, he threw his whole self into it. Really into it. For the sake of believability, that's all. Life or death. Yeah.
And now, whenever death does find him, he'll go down knowing exactly what Keith's lips feel like against his; what Keith's tongue tastes like; the grip of Keith's hands on his body; the hardness of Keith's hips when Lance presses against them. Never in a million years did he think he'd ever know such things, but now he's never going to be able to un-know them. Hell, he can almost still feel the heat of Keith's hand through the fabric of these shitty uniform pants.
He almost wishes he could un-know it all, because then maybe he could forget how much he liked it.
Maybe he could even convince himself that he doesn't sort of want to do it again.

The Galra was suddenly leaning down – his yellow eyes only inches away from Lance’s. His words, a whisper in Lance’s ear: A threat; a promise. “Oh, I am not going to touch him. He is the half-breed son of the woman who murdered my sister. He is the leader of Voltron. No, I am not going to touch him…I am going to break him.”
Or: Two years after season 8, a Blade mission goes wrong, and Keith is perceived to be dead. Lance refuses to believe that, and goes in search of him. What he finds, however, is worse than anything he imagined.

Does anyone know Lance is in love with Keith?
Of course not. And Lance would very much like to keep it that way, thank you! Keith already doesn't want anything to do with him ever since coming back from that space whale; the last thing Lance needs on top of his crumbling self-worth and shaky standing in the team is a rejection that shatters his heart in pieces, too.
But now, Lance got himself in a bit of a pickle. Which is fine, because Lance has a plan to get out of it! A wonderful, brilliant, masterful, completely fool-proof plan. His team won't look at him like he's more incompetent than they already do, he won't have to spend the rest of his life trapped on some alien planet, and Keith will never find out just how head over heels he is for him. It's a win-win-win situation.
Of course, with Keith, things are never quite so simple, and Lance's plan soon causes a domino effect that changes the entire course of his life.

Summary
It is not until one night, as they are resting in their shared room in the Serenitea Pot, that the trend of Aether's dreams changes slightly.
It is one of the rare nights that Xiao is allowing himself to sleep, dozing more than anything as he lays next to Aether, but his eyes snap open when he hears a whimper. Aether's brow is furrowed slightly, as is usual when he is having a nightmare, but he squirms a moment later, which is… less normal for him. Xiao watches him squirm a bit more and make several indecipherable murmurs, feeling more and more confused. His individual actions point towards a nightmare, but something's not quite adding up as it should. This is further emphasised when he hears a breathy "Xiao," from Aether.
Well, if he isn't in a nightmare, then what else could he be dreaming about? Xiao decides it wouldn't hurt to take a look just to be sure. He is not at all prepared for what he ends up intruding on.

He was always conscious of the danger his aura posed to others, and that wasn’t even getting into his power as an adeptus and the risk of mortal souls being damaged from exposure to him.
But he had never felt a piece of it detach like that, or seen it float so determinedly toward something - someone.
The fact that it had done so to Aether made him...not anxious, exactly. Apprehensive. Like all of that darkness was drawn to him, and some of it had finally acted on it.
Xiao could relate, at least to the being drawn to Aether part. But he wasn’t sure what worried him more: that the darkness had sought a person - that it had gone for Aether, one of the few people who seemed to genuinely want to be around him without expecting anything in return - when it usually preferred monsters, or that Xiao almost hadn’t noticed.
No, he realized an instant later. The worst part was that he couldn’t be sure that it hadn’t happened before.Series

"Not particularly," is Xiao's immediate and distressingly confident reply, and Aether's heart sinks. "But," Xiao quickly adds, averting his eyes, "it is something I would not mind trying."

He looks back down to his coffee, “I-I mean, for a studio art class. They’re hiring a model for figure drawing and… I don’t know, you might like it.”
When Xiao suggests Aether model for studio art classes, he never expected him to end up modeling for his class―or, to end up learning to meaning of the word "muse."

EnRoute to Mondstadt. They’ve been mitigating through Dragonspine slowly. Although, their pace is lugged from battling against the frozen ice lands along the countless resident Hilichurls and stray Fatui agents. On this journey, however, Aether finds opportunity to learn a few more information about Xiao.
The most surprising one of all, is that sometimes, Xiao says something completely unexpected it surprises Aether,
“When the snow gets thick enough, we can eat it.”
Xiao can be rather eccentric on occasions.
Although, he attributes to the fact that he’s been reclused in an Inn in Liyue for the better part of most years.
Aether raises a brow at him,
“... You can’t be serious, right?”

In all of the centuries Aether had lived, in all the worlds he’d traveled, and in all the people he’d met, Aether had never found a soul quite like Xiao’s.
Aether loved Xiao. He loved him so much that the feeling was palpable every time they spoke, and Aether would choke on his words, choke on the feeling of loving Xiao. It would build up in his throat like a million roots and weeds all tangled up inside, growing from the pit of his stomach.
He loved Xiao so, so much. But he loved him from a distance.

Ever since then, Xiao couldn't help but long for Aether's touch whenever the traveler was nearby. It was so frustrating how his mind wandered against his will. Before the Chasm incident, he hadn't felt the warmth of another's hands in thousands of years. It disgusted him, enraged him, and he promised himself that he'd never let anyone get so close to him again, both for his sanity and the other's safety. Affection was never for weapons of war, after all.
So why did he fantasize about the Traveler's touch so much? Why did he constantly think about how his hands felt in his hair? Why did he often imagine being pulled unimaginably close and squeezed to the point of painfulness? Such selfish thoughts. So selfish…
