Summary
Wylan Van Eck is a rising star. Jesper Fahey is hoping to make ends meet each month with poorly paid gigs. Five years ago they met in a band called "The Crows" and for two years, their dreams were becoming a reality. That was until an offer to get signed fell only on Wylan, resulting in a bad breakup of both the band and Jesper.
For the next five years, Wylan grew in popularity as The Crows faded from memory. Though, not everything about celebrity life is as glamorous as Wylan makes it out to be. Something darker is at play.
With a past intertwined together, what will happen when fate inevitably draws them back together again? How much of a difference can five years really make?

Jesper grimaces, just as instantly. “You don’t have to–”
“It’s nothing. It was part of a treatment this ‘doctor’ my father called had, for my reading…” Wylan makes a small, unspecific gesture with an awkward smile. The silence that hangs is thick.

Summary
Kaz Brekker, Wylan thought, was a very arrogant man.
Laying out his secret much like a cat lays out a dead animal for its owner, entirely too proud of itself. Of course, Wylan was mortified like the owner would be, but just like the owner this horrible feeling would dissipate and he would be able to throw this secret out like it had never truly mattered. Wylan would just have to hope Kaz didn’t go bringing another dead animal to his feet and leave it for Wylan to clean up.
Unfortunately, he might be killing the animal himself this time. With Inej bleeding out on the table, Nina leaning over her with roaming hands, a panicked look on her face, Wylan might have no other choice than to give Kaz something he could actually use him for rather than his Van Eck name.

He prays for a miracle, that finally, finally, his brain would comply, that he’d be able to prove his worth. Of course, all he sees is a jumbled mess of lines and shapes that don’t form any particular pattern. Of course. He’s still stupid.Wylan desperately begs, his face a mess of tears and snot and sweat. Jesper’s guns remain tight, a threat. “Dad, stop, I- you know I can’t, I can’t do it-”
“See?” Jan says, smugly, as if he’s won any sort of battle. “The boy cannot read. Nineteen years old and unable to read.”
“So you won’t mind if my man here puts two bullets through his skull.”

Kaz leaned back in his chair and set the notebook down. He looked at Wylan with renewed interest, like he was a lock that Kaz had to take apart. “Bad fathers exist everywhere in Ketterdam. Just because he didn’t kiss you goodnight doesn’t mean he wants you dead.”
Wylan bristled indignantly. “It’s the truth.”
“Even Van Eck cares about his legacy.”
“I’m not his legacy.” The words came out harder than Wylan intended. He was shocked by the force of them. They tasted bitter, like a poison he was drawing out of his body. And now that the truth was so close to the surface, he had to keep going. “I’ll never be. I’m useless to him. Because—, because—, because I can’t read.”

Summary
They’re kind of in the thick of the shit when the truth of Wylan’s identity comes out. No one really asks any questions, just takes the information at face value and moves along.
One of Wylan’s first nights in the barrel, a street merchant had laughed at Wylan as he stopped to offer a girl with messy hair and dirt smeared across her face half of the loaf of bread he’d just purchased. As he’d stooped down to offer it to her and check her over for injuries, her twin brother had bustled behind him, looting the rest of the measly krudge from Wylan’s pocket. When he’d crossed the street to the merchant to buy some fruit the merchant had chuffed he didn't have any krudge to offer. Wylan frantically searched his pocket only to come up empty handed.
“You gotta assume the worst about everyone in the barrel kid. ‘Cause you gotta be at your worst to end up in the dirty barrel.” The merchant offered him a dropped and bruised apple and sent him to scurry off. The kids have taken the money he’d been carrying to pay for his boarding for the week.
Or, the five times the crows are mean to Wylan after finding out his true identity, and the one time they try to make it up to him.

Summary
Maybe it was stupid of Wylan. An impulsive decision. But he didn’t care. Something snapped in his mind that instant. He grabbed a flash bomb out from his bag and ran past Kaz, faintly hearing the man call out for him. Or was that Jesper’s voice? Wylan didn’t have time to think as the squaller got closer and closer to Inej and he was running out of time. “Get down!” He yelled out, praying to Ghezen that Inej would react fast enough. Wylan threw the bomb in their direction and shut his eyes in hopes the effect wouldn’t be as blinding. It went off with a loud boom immediately knocking everyone off their feet.
Or, What if Wylan gets captured instead of Inej?
