Since he’d woken up from the nightmare, the whole day had been off, the shadow of Riko looming over him. Kevin’s anxiety had been slowly growing and now he was ruining Neil’s shirt with his snot and tears and disrupting what was supposed to be a peaceful night.
A soft tap against his hand broke him out of his thoughts.
“Yes or No?” Andrew’s voice remained even and bored.

“Before Baltimore. I was…” Silence hung as Andrew fidgeted with his cigarette (the way he always had when he was still medicated). The flame wiggled in the looming darkness, as he passed it from one hand to the other and then back. “I didn’t intend to hurt you.”
Kevin dropped his gaze back to the splotchy concrete of the alley. Absently, his scarred hand rubbed at his throat; the sting of a fierce grip, robbing him of breath, and bottomless eyes, boring into him, echoed in the dull thud of his pulse.
“I had it coming. I knew from the moment I kept quiet about Neil that I’d pay for it eventually. If not at your hands, then–” He cut himself off abruptly.
Riko. It always came back to Riko.

Like he said, Kevin was selfish. He would likely be doused in darkness of the Nest forever, and selfishly, he wanted there to be someone with him. Someone to share the burden of Riko’s attacks and the master’s harsh words and the smell of blood soaked cotton.
He knew though, in watching Jean smile softly at Jeremy, that Kevin was going to be alone for the rest of his life.

Kevin let out a huff of breath, rolling his eyes. “I’ll respect them when they give me a reason to.”
“And you wonder why they wouldn’t want to spend more time with you?” Wymack shook his head, running a hand over his face.
And Kevin must not have done a good job schooling his expression that time, because when Wymack looked at him again, Wymack froze, his expression shifting from annoyance to something else.
He sighed, coming to stand in front of Kevin. “If you could just try a bit –”
“I am,” Kevin cried, throwing his hands up. “I am trying. I have been trying.”
“You snap at everyone constantly –”
“This is how we talked to each other, this is how we all talked to each other in the – I don’t know why you all seem to think I can just turn it off when for a decade this is all I knew, this is the only way I could talk to someone and get them to listen, to respect me, to fucking care about what I was saying,” Kevin ran a tired hand over his face.
