His junior comes right up behind him as he pauses, his tone suddenly softer. “You’re angry with me.”
“Of course I’m angry!” Kaveh spins around on heel and forced himself to stare up at his roommate, barely able to keep the tremble out of his lip. “We had plans and you just…tossed them aside. Without so much as asking me!”
Alhaitham’s brows pinch together as he stares Kaveh down, as if trying to decipher a puzzle. “You could have just come with us-”
“That’s not the point!” He’s far too drunk for this. It’s getting harder and harder to fight back the sting in his eyes and the tight squeeze in his chest. “I just…I need to go to bed. We can talk about this later.”

Kaveh's carried a torch for Alhaitham pretty much since the first day they met. It's obvious to everyone but the Grand Sage himself, but Kaveh isn't ready to put himself out there and risk being shut down.
Turns out keeping his feelings to himself ends up hurting a lot more than he expected.
In which Kaveh gaslights himself (a lot), Alhaitham's bad at feelings, Cyno's jokes are terrible, and Tighnari's just trying his best.

Summary
When Alhaitham was much younger — intelligent enough to grasp the meaning of words, but too inexperienced to gain a deeper understanding of the content of what he was reading — he stumbled upon a paper on interpersonal relationships and sexual attraction. Hungry for knowledge, especially on a topic he felt himself to be existing at a certain distance from, he had breezed through all ninety pages of it. There was one line that has stuck with him inexplicably, as if it was meant to be stored in a safe space for later access:
It is a common occurrence for humans to find the scent of those pleasant whom they deem suitable as a sexual and/or romantic partner.
At the time, Alhaitham considers himself to be the exception. Years later, he arrives at the conclusion that his theory was completely off.

Looking around the room for a second time, Edmund’s jaw clenched when he saw no one had looked away yet. Some were sporting self-satisfied smirk, as if they already had the pretty boy moaning and keening under them, which… was impossible. This was the boy’s first meal here, Edmund could see it plainly, which meant he had been transferred there during the morning, not before. Others, even amongst his own men, were simply gaping at him, their own food forgotten.
“Look away,” Edmund gritted between his teeth, “this one’s mine.”
