At the same time that he’s wanted an owner for years, Kou doesn’t know what to do now that he has one. He’s so scared of humans that the very thought of interacting with one makes him shake. Despite endless daydreams of being petted and held and praised, he can’t think of anything now beyond how his owner could cause him pain.

That kind of thing had been his nightmare for as long as he can remember, but now, somehow, it’s over. There’s no more breeder, no more clients, no more fear of what’s to come. For all he knows, he has a permanent home. Of course, Laito isn’t optimistic enough to believe that’s the case. Or at least, not in the sense that he has any real security. The way it works for vampires is that there’s always a way to ruin good things. No matter how kind a human is, wrongdoing is never fully out of sight.

He should be better than this. Carla knows when it’s coming, but there’s still nothing he can do to stop it. Determination and dignity can’t overcome the necessities of vampire biology, no matter how hard he tries.
It starts with exhaustion, as it always does. Carla finds himself more tired than usual; limbs weighed down, muscles aching, body slowed. It’s harder to fight his natural nocturnal urges and make himself get up in the morning. Staying in his safe, comfortable nest of blankets and soft things sounds like the best idea possible, but it’s not an option. He has to be presentable. He has to appear by your side, obedient, as he always does.
By that point, he knows what’s coming. With no more of a sign than the tiredness, than the urge to sleep, it’s all too apparent what the problem is. Heat. Now that he’s better fed and had time to rest, his body has gone right back to the innate cycle that he never ceases to despise.
