Evan's surprise was total when his brother, with an expression that was halfway between despair and tenderness, hugged them both. It wasn't the kind of gesture she would expect from him, much less after having seen him tease her with that unpleasant mask.
From the corner of the room, William, the boys' father, watched the scene with a mixture of surprise and confusion. The way his eldest son had behaved, the abrupt change in his behavior, and the way he was clinging to his brothers, all of that was a mystery to him. He stopped his reprimand to watch, wondering what had caused such a transformation in his son. The question was drawn in his mind: What had happened for his stupid son to change?
