“It’s an honour to be chosen,” his mother had said, her voice so sickly sweet it had made Sirius’ stomach churn. So artificial in its affection, a counterfeit of the love he had always craved from her. “Don’t you see the example you’ll set? The privilege to be remembered this way?”
It doesn't feel like a privilege. Whatever fancy words his mother used to dress this up as, he has been ostracised and left for dead. Worse than left for dead—willingly carted out to be devoured by the beasts that prowl the mountains and the forests.

In 1968, Azkaban State Penitentiary reported finding convict Sirius Black stabbed to death inside the prison hospital.
In 2003, Hogsmeade P.D. finds Sirius Black's fractured skeleton in an escape tunnel outside the prison.
Homicide detectives Nymphadora Tonks and Charlie Weasley now must try and crack two puzzles: how it's possible for a man to die twice, and more importantly—who wanted Sirius Black dead at all.

Summary
The Proctor House was a wide-fronted timber saltbox: the oldest one in the village, Remus always said, although that never made much sense to Sirius because such a house would have needed four, maybe five men to build it, and the village was too far from the towns for the builders to have come here and left again at the end of each day, so it stood to reason that other houses must have existed first, if only to provide the builders with shelter whilst they worked on the Proctor House. Regardless, Remus thought it was the oldest, and Sirius had always known Remus was much cleverer than he, so it must have been the oldest.
Sirius and Remus in a village, in the past, picking apples and falling in love and falling apart, together.

Summary
He was smiling to himself, eyes still closed, and Sirius hadn't known at the time - but by Fifth Year would realise well enough - where this Remus had come from. He was always a little wild, somehow both impossibly distant and blindingly, achingly present, all at once, and in the beginning Sirius had ascribed it entirely to Remus's own innate nature or some sort of slight chemical neurodivergence that made him just a little bit more than the rest of them; a little bit magic, a little bit mad. Freer than the others. A tempest in an otherwise still ocean.
The boys at boarding school, told in libraries and cloisters and too much alcohol and the way Remus thinks none of it matters, anyway.

There's something blazingly incongruous about Remus in the wintertime. He's golden: sunshine and honeybees, caramel curls and freckles like dappled sunlight. Even his clothes seem borrowed, and temporary, as if he might've just thrown on an extra layer for a moment in the knowledge that his own innate aestival nature would be quite enough to stave off the worst of the chill. Something at home in long balmy nights, and mornings when the gardens teem with life and song. Wonderfully out of place in the winter: a happy visitor to the season, an ember in the frost.
Christmastime in the Cotswolds: cold hands, crackling fires, and Remus's indefatigable quest for parsnips.
