Summary
Hal Emmerich is a mobility aid engineer struggling with a balancing act of committing to his job and his adopted daughter, Sunny Emmerich. In between leading important projects and raising a young girl, little time remains for Hal to put himself out there and find a partner. He's abandoned the idea entirely; tall walls have been built around his heart, the key only gifted to his daughter. But... that man he can't stop seeing around town keeps managing to get involved in his life, whether Hal wants it or not. And those walls are tall, but quite thin.

Summary
Extreme canon divergence/ AU: What if Eiji never injured himself and therefore never came to the US? The events of Banana Fish still happened, but differently, as Eiji wasn't there to influence them.
Without the injury to slow him down, Eiji Okumura continued to pole vault and eventually won the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (which actually took place in 2021). Two and a half years later, he finally arrives in New York City. Haunted by feelings of inadequacy, he's ready to give up pole vaulting and create a new life for himself as a photographer. However, the immigration process in the US is long and complicated, and there's no guarantee he'll even be accepted.
Eiji wants a shortcut, and Max Lobo suggests one in the form of a fake marriage to Ash Lynx.

Summary
A routine day on the water is turned on its head when fisherman Eiji Okumura spots a strange creature in his fishing net. His excitement quickly morphs into disbelief when he realizes that what he caught is no fish: it’s a mermaid, beautiful and deadly—and, as he soon learns, gravely injured.
Desperate to save them, Eiji spirits the mermaid away to his home and nurses them back to health in his bathtub. As they recover, he learns more about them and their situation: their name is Ash; they can’t hope to survive without a fin to replace the one they lost; and in a year’s time, their pod will once again return to the bay where Eiji first found them.
Together, Eiji and his friends devise a plan to rehabilitate Ash and reunite them with their pod. Yet as Ash gains strength, so, too, do the bonds they forge, and the prospect of saying goodbye becomes far more difficult than anyone bargained for.

Of course, Ash has come a long way since then.
"Makeup," Ash says, snapping his fingers. "Get me Shorter here ASAP."
He's come a long, long way, in some regards.
Dino steps out onto the set, cold eyes already focused on Ash, and Ash's blood turns to ice.
Other things haven't changed much. Not really.
Dino puts a hand on Ash's shoulder, and Ash stares at the same cracks in the floor that he memorized years ago.
Yeah. Some things haven't changed at all.
Ash is a model at an agency owned by Dino Golzine, and he's accepted his role as the star—including everything that comes with. But when Eiji comes on as a contract photographer, suddenly Ash isn't quite as afraid to be in front of the camera. Of course, caring about Eiji also means he has more to lose.

Not long after the death of Dino Golzine and the destruction of his work, gang leaders Ash Lynx and Shorter Wong are forced into an untimely deal: root out the weeds of his influence and the remnants of his existence spread across the country, or spend the next six months in prison.
For obvious reasons, they take the former option.
Queue oblivious tourist/hitchhiker Okumura Eiji, stranded after his train ticket was declined, and you have a cross-country road trip recipe for disaster. New York to LA is a long voyage, and lots can happen on the endless expanse of American countryside.

Protocol One, which states that no animatronic may hurt, injure or kill any guests, with full authorizations to protect them from any perceived threats.
And Protocol Zero, which states that any minor must be protected and helped at all costs, to the point of overriding other routines and protocols.

"Well..." He grinned pitifully as he picked the mug back up, green eyes shining with some sort of emotion. "He probably wished he was, at the least."
Eiji Okumura travels to a large distant island called Manhattan, in search for information on the mythical Banana Fish in order to save his land from it's 100 year curse. With tips from locals, he was told the one person who's seen this mythical creature is none other than the notorious Captain Ash Lynx- one of the most wanted pirates on the land.
