Summary
Ruth Merrick is your typical unmarried woman in the latter part of the 21st Century. She lives in a crappy apartment and works at a crappy job and barely has the energy to take care of herself most days. Then, on her 40th birthday, she receives an unexpected gift. Much to her surprise, it's a fully functional android caretaker model XJ6743-9 with all the latest upgrades. Activating it is a fun, new experience for her and her life improves immeasurably with his help. She doesn't have much in the way of friends or family anymore and having a companion, even an artificial one, has her mental health improving as time passes.
It's just too bad that sometimes things really are too good to be true.
