Goro doesn’t even get a chance to complain before Kurusu is sliding an arm around his back and beneath his knees. He’s immediately greeted by a wave of pain that outclasses all the others before, a kind of pain that makes him feel as if his entire body is breaking in two. Makes him think: fuck, maybe it actually is.
He grits his teeth. “Joker, stop.”
Kurusu instantly freezes, meeting his eyes with clear alarm.
“What’s wrong?”
“I think my hip might be broken.”

Goro stops walking. His wide eyes glisten under the streetlights—glossy like the twin buttons on a teddy bear’s face, glossy like the buttons on his crisp linen shirt, glossy like the metaphorical buttons that Akira aches to push. They stand still long enough for a car to rumble past, long enough for Akira’s pulse to skyrocket, for his palms to clam up with sweat that has nothing to do with the heat.
“If it’s only a matter of buttons,” Akechi whispers, “then I could say the same about you. Seduction is just... altering your behavior, tailoring it, putting on a show. Give me a week, Kurusu. I’ll make you the ‘desperate’ one.”
(Or: Goro and Akira make a bet.)

Yusuke doesn’t remember his mother. Not really. He doesn’t realize this is strange until he’s seven years old and the class is assigned with drawing family portraits. Yusuke, as usual, puts his heart into it: he draws a magnificent self-portrait that he thinks, based on the scribblings of his peers, is far above what would be produced by the average student.
“You were supposed to draw your parents, stupid,” one of the children tells him.
“What?” Yusuke looks at the drawing. His family -- it’s just him, isn’t it? He knows he had a mother, but it would be dishonest to draw her when he doesn’t remember her. “But I don’t have any.”

He knows that he does not experience emotion, and he knows that this is to his advantage. He does not feel, he perceives. Observes. Gathers data. He knows he must understand the outward signs of human emotion, he must use this data to select which response protocol to follow, based on the probabilities of emotional response. He does not experience emotion, and therefore the emotion of others can be analyzed.
There is no reason, when a young human boy calls out to him by a name he does not know, that he should not be able to respond to the emotions he is expressing.
