Summary
Jason wasn't great at expressing affection, something Dick did as easy as breathing. For Dick, 'I love you's were nothing, simple, but for Jason… It's not that he didn't love Dick — he did — but putting himself in such a vulnerable position, just saying it so casually like that, it felt impossible.

Arkham Knight's words are clipped. “Are you saying I have cat ears?”
It takes Dick’s brain a generous moment to catch up. He's all gunked up, slow to process. Definitely not firing on every cylinder. Probably not even half of them.
“Yeah.” Dick narrows his eyes, gaze locked on said ears. “Don’t you?”
“They’re b–” Arkham Knight snaps, then abruptly cuts himself off. Takes an audible breath even through the helmet. “No. I don't.”
“You totally do,” Dick argues, tone dreamy. His eyes slide back down. He grins. “It's cute. You're a kitty cat. Big, buff, scary kitty cat.”

Dick gets a concussion mid-fight and is miraculously saved by none other than the Arkham Knight. While waiting for the cavalry, they chat. It leads to something neither of them quite expected.

None of his things held sentimental value, therefore there would be no pain in losing them, sure.
Still, it didn’t mean that it wasn’t a bitch to handle when his helmet broke down for what was probably the sixth time this month.
“It’s like a beacon,” Dick said around the mouthful of the alarmingly red venison chili he had ordered online. He was seated on the kitchen’s barstool and was gesturing at the helmet which Jason held across him on the island. “It’s bright red, Jay. You’re almost giving people permission to hit your head around like a baseball.”
or: jason's melodramatic and his helmet keeps breaking. things aren't really this simple.

Summary
“Damian could have died tonight,” Jon says. There’s so much swallowed emotion in his voice that his heart has turned hollow. “And I can’t… I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if that happened. If I lost him.”
It feels like staring into an eclipse. There’s more light around the edges, more truth in what he’s not saying than what he is. Jason’s been blinded by empathy too many times to fling himself into it now, floating through life as the ghost of a starry-eyed kid who chased love 'til it set him ablaze.
But a part of him, long-since buried, still reaches toward the sun.
Damian is injured on the field, and Jason is roped into helping him. Somehow, he helps with more than just stitches.

Jason is fairly certain it's too late to salvage whatever it is that's broken by the time he realizes anything's broken at all. Dick's been distant for months, pulling back in ways Jason isn't certain he's truly noticed until Dick's just... not there. Not there when Jason gets up in the morning. Not there when Jason sits down to dinner. Not there when Jason gets home from patrol, where Dick very much was. Still not there when Jason showers and lays down to go to bed.

“Why not?”
Jason shrugged. “You gotta be pure. Like, no regrets, no grudges, no murder—basically, no fun. Blink the wrong way and boom, eternal dial tone.”
Dick winced. “Hard pass.”
“Second sister’s… invisible. Lives in a void. Her door leads back to the mortal world.”
“So how do we find her?”
“You don’t. She finds you. But only if the third sister says you can.”
“And she is…?”
Jason smirked. “Death. Looks like she lost a war with a filing cabinet. Does all the soul paperwork and decides who gets a round trip. She let me out last time.”
Dick raised an eyebrow. “Because of your ‘revenge on Batman’ plan?”
Jason grinned. “I made it sound poetic. And I had killer eyebrows.”
