When John had shouldered open a door in the bar, he hadn't really expected to be greeted with the sight that he was. By all means, it should've been a wholly uneventful night out. He was just looking for an exit to temporarily escape Franklin's idioms and metaphors and what-have-yous.
He really didn't expect to see Mr. Jefferson, naked from the waist down, settled in Mr. Lee's lap. Mr. Lee, who was also half naked, and who appeared all but buried inside of Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson is quiet, awkwardly charming, skilled with a quill, and deeply confusing to anybody who gets too close.
Together, they manage to piss off every person who has the misfortune of happening across them, including one another.
In other words, how history’s greatest love story might have happened.
