Summary
After the Boxing Day fight, Ilya's place doesn't almost crash and Shane doesn't propose. Instead, he turns to self harm to cope with the self hatred feels as a result of the Metro's hostility, Ilya's inability to communicate, and his belief that he's the reason for everything wrong in their relationship and the team dynamic.
What starts as a self proclaimed unhealthy coping mechanism comes to a head when Ilya finds out and realizes just how much he underestimated the degree to Shane was struggling and the impact hiding had on him.
Will they find their way back to each other or will Shane let his depression eat him alive, leaving everything he ever loved, including hockey, to the past.

I really want to explore a story where Shane struggles deeply with his mental health. I find it hard to imagine that everything didn't take more of a toll on him. It's dark but there is light at the end of the tunnel. This is pretty heavy so if self harm or eating disorders are triggering for you pls don't read!

Maybe Ilya was right. He really is too afraid.
Shane feels a tear streak down his face, and he lifts his numb fingers, pressing his cold fingers to his equally cold cheek, and then smiles to himself. He can’t stop the laugh from leaving his mouth, even though it makes his lungs hurt, even though it makes his chest feel like it’s about to cave in.
His entire life has been spent on the ice. His entire life has been cold, and so maybe it’s fitting that he dies in the cold, too. To let his body be reclaimed by the elements, and then the world is left wondering just where Shane Hollander disappeared to.
At least the sun is somewhat warm as it basks on his face, and Shane manages one little smile, thinking about the sunlight that would stream into the cottage, and illuminate his boyfriend’s face.
It’s the last thing he thinks about before he succumbs to unconsciousness.
Or: The Boxing Day fight goes horribly wrong, leaving Shane and Ilya to reevaluate their lives, relationship, and careers. A story of loss, bargaining, and reconciliation.

Shane Hollander habitually ends up in other people's dreams, which is fine. It's a family trait, on both sides, to slip into the dreams of the people you love. What's less fine is how Shane keeps dreaming strangers.

Inevitably, everything gets out of control and Ilya, Troy, and the Centaurs are left to grapple with the uncomfortable reality Shane faces as a gay Asian-Canadian who plays hockey.

Until moments with Ilya and the Raiders show him exactly why he chose correctly.

Hayden’s eyes flickered to Shane, who he sat on the bench, chewing on the edge of his mouth guard.
“Don’t fucking look at him,” Ilya insisted as he bent down for the faceoff.
“Excuse me?” Hayden mumbled, eyes darting back to him.
“You heard me,” he retorted, his tone clipped. “He’s not your teammate anymore; he’s mine. If you think Marlow is a problem to your game, wait until you see what I will do to your team if you hurt anyone on mine again.”
Hayden scoffed, dipping his head as he tried to focus on the game. Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that.
The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.
