Alright. Kilgharrah had had enough of this shit. He was over 1000 years old and he had still never met someone so inclined into getting into trouble as his lord and brother, Merlin.
He had been alone so long. Twenty years without a soul left in the world who cared about him. He was the Great Dragon, Triple Goddess be damned. No longer would he let Merlin risk his life alone, unprotected and uncared for.
There was only one clear course of action left.
Assume human form and move to Camelot as Merlin’ long lost half brother. It was mostly true, anyways.
There was no way for this to go wrong, he was sure.

Summary
There’s a knock at his door and Merlin curls further in on himself, and all he can see is the woman on the pyre, but now he’s joining her, and the flames are growing, and –
“Merlin?” It’s Gwaine. Merlin didn’t see him come in but suddenly he’s sitting on the bed in front of him, reaching a hand out to touch but not quite closing the distance. Merlin lets out a sob, in anguish or relief he doesn’t know, and he falls forwards. The knight wraps his arms around Merlin and silently holds him as Merlin cries. The yelling gets louder. Merlin can smell smoke in the air. Gwaine hugs him tighter.

“Oh, these are fantastic, Arthur! Truly. Gaius will be so pleased. We can never afford roses.”
Merlin found what he was looking for – a knife – and turned back to the roses. Arthur let out a strangled sound as he sliced off the heads of the roses, tossing the stalks away.
“Roses have so many health benefits,” Merlin offered conversationally. “They can help reduce pain, depression, anxiety, stress… You're getting quite good at identifying the right flowers for medicinal use!”
