“Close your eyes, dears,” she told them. She waited until both of her sons had their eyes closed.
Then, she looked at Max, at her lover, at her fiancé. This would be the last time she’d look at him with her human eyes, with her humanity still intact. She didn’t know what killing would truly do to her.
It impacted Michael and Sam quite drastically. Their personalities were mostly still intact, but they didn’t really care about people anymore. They saw the people of Santa Carla as food—girls, boys, men, women, the elderly, drunks and druggies, hippies and goths, children and even babies—all food.
Max, with his charming personality and perfect teeth, his love of New Age music and romcoms…he’d still love her…no matter who she became. He was smiling at her. He was proud of her, she could tell. He nodded his head at her as if to say, “Go on, Lucy.”

Lucy has been having a hard time making her first kill. Max suggests killing her ex, because he knows how much pain he caused her; it should be easy to kill him. Michael and Sam come along because they don’t want to waste the opportunity of seeing their asshole father dying.

Summary
If David had decided right from the beginning he wasn't too hot on following Max's rules, what might have turned out differently? His agenda would have been very different, too, if Star and Laddie hadn't been brought into the equation. Too bad for the Emersons, it doesn't seem like they'd ever be free from the Lost Boys, no matter what their reasons for meeting might have been.

The city has changed a lot since the bad old days, and with less vampires around there's plenty more entertainment on the boardwalk. Michael is more than just a meal, and Sam's got some weird friends convinced Santa Carla is run by aliens. Nothing is ever going to be normal here.

Michael hadn't even registered what was different until he'd seen the look of relief on Star's face and heard her whispered breath of, "It's gone, Laddie, it's finally gone."
He would have asked her what was gone if he didn't feel the exact what in question.
If he didn't feel the deep stirrings of hunger still sitting in his gut, twisting and pulling at him until he felt weak to its draw. If he didn't find his eyes inadvertently wandering to the exposed bronze flesh of Star's throat when Laddie thoughtlessly pushed her hair back as he flung his tiny arms around her neck.
Even with David's lifeless body some 30 feet away from him, all Michael could think about in that moment was the boy's words mere days ago:
"But you must feed."
