Anne thought she was good at hiding it. She put on her best fake smile, only cried in the privacy of the night when everyone else was asleep, and kept herself tethered enough to reality to know when to act like a person and when she could retreat back into her mind. She was numb most of the time. She preferred the numb, it felt safe, it felt like nothing. She would rather feel nothing - ‘nothing’ was easy, it was simple and pain-free because it was nothing. It was far better than the only alternative.
For the sake of everyone else, she could handle this alone. What’s one more thing on her loaded plate? This was her own shit to deal with, she didn’t need to drag others into her pity party. All she needed to do was keep herself together until they could get back to Amphibia where she would find Sasha and Marcy, defeat Andrias, and come home. The premise: the Winter Soldier's mask doesn't come off quite as easily. Meaning, Steve never saw Bucky's face, and he didn't hold back during the fight on the Helicarrier.
