Carrie convulses in her arms, a choked laugh that ends in a faint wheeze. The girl’s fingers are starting to squeeze on her face and a manic light has reclaimed her. In Sue’s head, all around and within her, there is a voice, kicking and clawing and shrieking in what she feels and knows is one last desperate surge of unfathomable power .

Atop a tombstone hill, there is a manor house carved from powdery stone, visible only by its shadow. Grand windows stare out like watchful eyes to leer over the forest. Dark slats of heavy lumber lay flat over the thick stone walls, keeping out the weather. The walls embrace to form a small, sandy courtyard. It contains a structure, freestanding, a stout tower built of dark, uneven brick, bearing a coned roof of clay. Within this thick windowless darkness is a girl of about fifteen.
(A horror story about girlhood a long time ago and today.)

It's not like it was the first time she's seen a family member in peril.
She's seen her family pushed to the absolute limit and come out stronger- or at least a little better than they went in, but… those times were different. Things had been…well, different, to say the very least. In the aftermath of Belos’ demise and de-puppetfying everyone, Hunter had been given multiple offers in terms of housing from the various adults, Darius included.
And after shifting through and considering his options, Hunter had chosen here.
Just acknowledging it made something warm and cold burst inside of Darius’ chest like fireworks. He hadn’t allowed the nerves to visibly wrack him in front of the kid, wanting to become some semblance of a grounded figure he could rely on without doubt.
He’d even almost convinced himself he was ready for it.

But what they did this time was something done only by the cruelest of demons, and it wasn't just torture. It was a violation to the nth degree.
