Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.
In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.

Shane lifts one eyelid again to look at Rozanov. His eyes are red-rimmed. Like he’s been crying. “Why…why aren’t you in Boston?”
Rozanov’s brow furrows. “Why would I be in Boston?”
“You, you’re captain. Raiders. Boston.”
The room is silent except for the beeping of monitors.
In 2023, Shane takes a bad hit on the ice. When he wakes up, the last thing he remembers is a tuna melt.
There’s a lot to get used to.

Everything Shane has ever done has resulted in something else. People would call that karma, or physics, but Shane knows better. There are moments he’s sure he has the ability to control everything with a right or wrong thought. And there are moments of clarity where he knows this isn’t true.

He can feel the tears soaking his face as Ilya starts fucking into him with his whole self, Shane is the safest he’s ever been. His head swims with a peaceful nothingness. If he feels himself drooling, it no longer matters. It’s no longer disgusting. There is no disgust where he lives, joined to Ilya, dissolving into him.

So much of their conversations are Ilya waiting for an answer, and getting the one he had already predicted. Shane likes that he still waits.

Summary
Shane and Ilya had mutually agreed to keep their whatever-they’re-doing out of Sochi. It was an easy decision to make: this was bigger than any MLH rivalry and definitely bigger than a few hotel hook-ups. There was no room for distractions, not with Olympic gold on the line.
So it’d be really fucking great if their daemons could get on the same page and stop trying to cause an international fucking incident.

i am losing my mind. i am rending my clothes. i am climbing onto my roof and screaming at the top of my lungs. this fic... this fic!! it is so gorgeous, so blisteringly insightful. the daemon world building is so rich and layered, and ren and sima's personalities are so well-defined and honest. and oh, oh, the amount of aching, perfect character analysis that comes out of having these external souls... it's astonishing. it's perfect. the ilya of it all, in particular, bowled me over without warning and without mercy, just: ow. and also: yes.
ALSOOOOO the way shane touching sima felt warm and golden, and ilya touching ren felt icy cold and free.... the way shane's love is rooted in honesty and ilya's in protection.... im gonna lose it, possibly, definitely.
what an absolute, utter joy to read. i would give anything to read this again for the first time; i am already so excited for my first reread. what a joy.

It’s Rozanov. And Shane just wants—he’ll figure that part out later, alright. The wanting is enough to justify the reaching. It always has been so far.
He supposes he is lucky in that regard, but only the kind of lucky that people who survive shipwrecks are: fortunate but ruined all the same.
Ilya should probably warn Hollander about the way he loves, just in case. His love is the deep, prevailing kind. Buyer beware. / Everything, he wants to say. He wants to say, I think I am afraid of everything, all the time.

Summary
The Swiss National League doesn’t care about the legendary Hollander-Rozanov rivalry. When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.
Then the lockout ends in January, and it’s time to go back. Back to different countries, cities, lives. Beds.

“You wouldn’t ruin it, we’d clean it out,” Shane mutters, but he sits back down. Well, he pushes the loose blankets further into the crease between Ilya’s body and the couch first, tucking him in. Then he sits down, as if that was a normal thing to do and a simple thing to survive.
Ilya has to focus very hard on the thread of their conversation so he doesn’t do something very stupid, like beg for more. Beg for another soft touch, another glimpse into the great well of tenderness Shane Hollander is capable of bestowing upon people. Ilya feels strung-out, desperate, starving, aching for more, for again.//
Ilya knows he’ll be smiling if Ilya looks over at him, so he doesn’t. One of the things you learn if you live with devastation at your doorstep long enough is what’s survivable and what must be outrun at all costs. The way Shane smiles at him sometimes, crinkled eyes and exposed teeth and a scrunched up nose—this afternoon, that feels like it falls wholly into the second category.

Fuck, Shane doesn’t want anything more in the world than he wants Ilya to hold him and never let him go. But Ilya’s never going to do that. He’s never going to ask Shane not to get on the plane. He’s never going to grab at his hand and stop him from leaving the house. He’s always going to let him go, because he thinks that’s what Shane wants or what Shane needs, and so he’s going to do it for him and pretend it’s easy, and then he’s going to—to paint his kitchen yellow and get drunk in a noisy, sticky Californian club and tell everyone but Shane that he misses him.
When Shane had forced himself off the neighbor’s stoop, back in Zürich, after the lockout ended and all the rubble of it had begun to settle in his brain, he’d realized he didn’t even have the keys to the door. He’d run out without them. But when he’d tried the door, it’d been unlocked. Every light in the house was off, and the door to Ilya’s bedroom had been shut tight.
But the front door had been left unlocked. So Shane could come back.
“I love you,” Shane tells the kitchen cabinets. “I’m in love with you.” -

“Yeah.”
Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.”
Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?”
Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?”
Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?”
Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.”
“Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.”

After a lengthy pause in which Shane is unprofessionally lost in those glittering eyes, the firefighter grabs the hem of his shirt and begins to lift. He stops almost instantly with his elbows crossed over his face and his chiseled abdomen right there for Shane to gawp at, holy shit.
The pained noise the man makes jars Shane back into motion. “Right, okay. My turn,” he mumbles, smoothing the fireman’s hands back onto his lap.
