“Hey,” Buck says, nudging Eddie with his elbow. He tips his chin towards the toothbrush in Eddie’s hands. “Gimme that when you’re done.”
Eddie pauses, the circular motions of his brushing coming to a halt. The toothbrush stays wedged between his teeth. His mouth still hangs open. “Uh,” he says, and toothpaste trickles from the corner of his mouth. “My toothbrush?”
Except — it comes out more like muh too bruh?
Buck snorts, chest glowing warm, and nods. “Yeah, what else?”
Eddie’s brow wrinkles, and his nose scrunches. “Uh, no?” He replies. “That’s gross.”

Turns out the Hildy records what’s being said so it can give better adverts and the mechanism has completely broken. So anytime a button is pressed it’s playing back stuff it’s recorded matching the user profile name.”
“So anytime we make a coffee it’s going to play something about us?” Ravi asks.
“Sounds that way.” Buck answers.

Eddie didn’t hate charity.
He just hated this stupid event.
“Okay! Next up for the taking is… Evan Buckley of the 118!”
Buck wasn’t a prize (ignoring the fact in this context - he was), and he wasn’t a bit of meat to be paraded in front of a cheering crowd. He wasn’t some cut and dry macho fireman with the personality of wet drywall.
He was brave, and strong, and kind, and considerate, and he deserved better than to be standing on some poorly constructed stage in downtown LA about to be auctioned off to some random person for a night of romance.

“Talk to me”
Eddie stops with his hands gripping his hips.
“I think I might be homophobic.”
Hen blinks.
“Excuse me?”
“I’m serious”
Eddie says with wide eyes.
“I—I was watching Buck and Tommy and I just—I got so angry I couldn’t stop looking. And then I started thinking things like... like how Buck smells, or his laugh, or how good his arms look and the way he walks I noticed everything and I was—mad that Tommy was touching him like that and I thought, ‘You can’t be feeling this way about your best friend, Eddie’ so maybe it’s internalized, or—”
Hen puts a firm hand on his shoulder.
“Eddie”
He pauses.
Hen looks him dead in the eyes.“You’re not homophobic”
“You’re gay”Karen is behind her and raises an eyebrow and nods sagely.
“Textbook gay panic”
Eddie stares at them like they’ve just spoken in tongues.
“I—what?”
Or:Eddie has a gay crises and gets jealous over Tommy and Buck figures out he’s in love with Eddie and loses his mind

He coughed and forced himself up.
His knees wobbled but adrenaline shoved him forward.
Somewhere above him Bobby’s voice cracked through the static of his radio.
“Wilson,Han,Panikar,Diaz and Buckley report!”
“Han here!”
“Got banged up cap but I’m here”
Hen said while coughing.
“Athena and me are here”Ravi said through his mic.
Silence.
“Buckley, Diaz report!”
Bobby’s voice was sharp now and urgent.
Eddie fumbled for his radio.“Eddie here”
he rasped while pressing it to his mouth.
“I’m-i’m down below, hit my head, but I’m okay. Buck’s-“
His chest tightened.
“Buck’s not with me. He fell”
“Do you have eyes on him?”
Bobby demanded.
Eddie turned in a slow circle with the destroyed highway stretching in every direction like an open wound.
Shattered cars, broken slabs of road, twisted metal and no sign of Buck.“No”
Eddie whispered.
Or: The 118 are on a call on a highway and there’s a earthquake and Buck gets lost and hurt

Everyone nodded.
Easy.
Straightforward.
Except, of course, Buck was being Buck.He pushed open the front door before anyone could stop him, muttering,
“Got it, Cap, inside sweep!”
and walked right in.
Hen looked up from her detector.“Wait-did he-?”
Eddie froze mid step with his eyes going wide.
“Buck!”
Chim turned.
“He didn’t-oh my god- he didn’t put his mask on!”
Bobby’s voice shot through the chaos like a thunderclap.
“BUCK!”
Inside Buck’s muffled voice floated out, cheerful and oblivious.
“It smells kinda weird in here!”
Eddie swore under his breath while sprinting after him.
“You idiot, that’s literally the gas!”
OR:the 118 get a call about a possible gas leak and buck accidentally gets high (also with established buddie)

She chuckles while sipping her coffee.

She tilts her head.
“You worried about him like family, or like the man you’ve been in love with since before you knew it?”

she says innocently but her eyes are warm, sharp.

“Because I think it would be hot,” Buck responds. Eddie can picture him, leaning against the red bricks around the back of the firehouse. It’s where Eddie would hide, sometimes, so he could call Christopher. Before he came to El Paso, after it started to embarrass him how much he’d call and receive no answer. Eddie imagines the sun shining down on Buck, his ankles crossed and his hips tilted away from the wall behind him. Maybe a hand in his pocket. So nonchalant, as he asks about it. “It would be hot if you did it just because I asked you.”
They travel the length of space and time between Point A and Point B; Buck and Eddie, over the phone, and Buck and Eddie, in person.

“Right, uh,” Buck’s brain is very quickly piecing together the slow onceovers, no doubt cataloguing the matching sleep-soft sweatpants and cozy hoodies and unbrushed hair at breakfast-time on a weekday. The singular witnessed conversation regarding co-purchased home cleaning products. The lack of personal space followed by the hasty exit when made to interact with an ex of sorts. “He’s, uh, he’s actually my best friend.”
“Hey man, I love that for you. That’s the best way to do it, you know? Wish everyone got that in their relationship.” She's smiling very warmly at him. Buck’s sweating again.
“He’s my partner,” Buck stresses, as much emphasis on the word ‘partner’ as he can manage.

Buck had never been more alone since Eddie left for El Paso. He needed a change, something to help him determine who he was on his own. Becoming a paramedic and moving to Austin was his chance at a fresh start.
What he didn't expect was a call out to a school trip and to hear a familiar voice yelling for him. Christopher.
A chance reunion with Eddie, knowing that the Diaz's missed Buck as much as he missed them, maybe Buck didn't need to let everything go. Maybe he could have what he's always wanted.
