Summary
Dirk Strider is resigned to a cold, dark and above all lonely existence. Hunting the dangerous creatures that plague humanity from the shadows has its risks, and it turns out life as a glorified bloodsucking corpse isn't all it's cracked up to be. He can deal though. At least, he could - until an unexpected encounter with a werewolf on the run turns his unlife upside down. Suddenly Dirk is worried his unbeating heart might not be quite as cold and dead as he thought it was, and that's the least of his fucking problems.

Summary
Surviving and a failure to thrive aren't mutually exclusive. Things rack up. Injuries don't always get the chance to heal. Appetites wither in the face of repeated and prolonged stress. He's keeping up, but he isn't. He's making it through, but not well. Supplies continue to dwindle, and he's feeling the toll.
Dirk Strider's life has never been easy. But if humanity's hallmarks advertise anything, it's tenacity above all adversity, and, above all else: Adaptability.
Now, who could blame him for taking that to heart?

Fundamentals aside, 30 years is a long time to spend anchored with nothing but a purpose that can no longer be fulfilled. So, maybe, when somebody new comes wandering in, it's a little hard not to get too attached. But that's alright, helping is what he was meant to do.
And it's nice to shake the rust off every once in a while.
