Summary
They both sit down on the dry, hard ground, with Crowley cross-legged and Aziraphale with his legs out straight. The ground is rough and uncomfortable, but it would do little good to complain.
They both look at the sky, and there are no stars shining in that mess of fire and blaze—no nebulas or pretty little constellations. He’s not technically sure if it’s night or day right now, actually.
“There used to be an ocean here, you know,” Aziraphale says, even though they both already know that very well. “Life. There were whales, and dolphins. Sharks—”
“I know,” Crowley says, soft. “Humans, too, ‘cause people used to sail out here. Big ships in the water, and then planes in the sky over it all. The middle of the ocean.”
“Yes,” Aziraphale says, almost a whisper. The wind blows through his white curls like a symbol—of what, Crowley isn’t quite sure.
Respites from the battlefield are a bittersweet rendition of what 'before' maybe, should've, could've been.
Too late now.

Summary
Crowley looked like something one would like to soften with a sponge and possibly ask to calm down: all pointy angles and something in the way of agitation contained in the crooks and sinews. He looked laid-back, but in the sense that he’d been laid on a flaring surface of teething anxiety that prodded him to jump up occasionally. He looked a little bit of perpetually lost, and mildly like someone who would choose to sleep through a century just to shy away from having to continuously exist.
No, Crowley didn’t look like that, especially not at first glance, but that was exactly what Aziraphale could see in him anyway.

For Aziraphale, there were always two Crowleys: the First Crowley, the one he met in the Garden, the one he's spent 6000 years meeting across human history. And there is the Second Crowley, the one who comes to him across time, again and again, propelled, it would seem, by some unknown tragedy. Both, his hereditary enemy. His dearest friend.
For Crowley, there is a Before, and there is an After. Before, he spent 6000 years as Hell's agent on Earth, seeing Aziraphale occasionally, working together where they could get away with it. After... After, he's drawn back over and over, like he's attached by a tether that just won't let him go.
Not that he wants it to let him go. The alternative...

History is written by the victors.
Aziraphale drifts through the aftermath of the Last War, Adam walks the barren Earth.
The angel seeks solace in a gallery bright with lies and attempts to distract his grieving mind by taking up the craft. The artwork of the gallery is abundant with false scenes, with twisted myths of hellish demons and faltering humanity, with the unquestionable glory of Heaven.
Aziraphale finds himself once more before a scene of Eden. A serpent rears, vile and terrifying, as Eve reaches for an apple that will unravel everything. Aziraphale remembers a very different scene and his heart aches as he wonders on the fate of the serpent, on whether he will ever find passage into the hidden halls of Heaven's prisons.
