Aw, shit. Jax's face burned, and he clenched his jaw, refusing to look up. He shouldn't have asked. There was no reason for him to ask.
He felt Zooble's gaze on him, curious and guarded. There was a pause. "That's pretty vague, Jax."
"You know," he muttered, waving a hand. Embarrassed. Always embarrassed. "The, uh- they/them thing."

Post-abstraction and post-Pomni bringing him back, Jax has a conversation with Zooble that forces him to confront something about himself that he doesn't quite know how to deal with, much less admit to someone. Not even Pomni.

Summary
When a petty joke from the suggestion box gets twisted up into an entirely new adventure by Caine, the entire cast has their genders swapped for the day: the boys are girls, the girls are boys, and Zooble is—well, Zooble with a hue shift.
For most, it’s awkward, and maybe a little bit funny in places. All they have to do is coach each other through a series of whatever Caine’s ideas on stereotypical, 'gendered activities' are, and they’ll go back to normal.
For Jax, however…
It’s perhaps a bit of an eye-opener.
(Or: In a move that surprises everyone but makes complete sense in hindsight, it turns out that Jax actually is an egg that needs to be cracked open.)

Summary
On the final precipice of abstraction, Jax—against all reason, against all impossibility—glimpses the view from halfway down before he gives himself the chance to jump. The fall, after all, seems much worse when you’ve been given a better sense for what happens when you hit the ground. For better or worse, Jax now has his whole life ahead of him (or, at least, whatever counts as a life for a brain scan).
But it’s one thing, to decide that you don’t want to die. It’s another thing entirely to decide that you want to live.
(Or: It takes something like a miracle to stop Jax from abstracting. Fortunately, it just takes a hell of a lot of work to get her to figure out everything else.)

Summary
The first time she wakes up, she’s alone.
It takes months, years, maybe decades. She's not sure at all. But patience and mercy finally take effect, and Jax finds herself waking up in a blanket fort, static fading from her mind, and people waiting for her outside.

Summary
Sometimes, on the rare nights they spend in bed together, Pomni will sit up by her side, and watch her sleep.
Usually she situates herself lower down the bed, like she wants to be small. She'll throw her arm over Pomni's waist and tuck the scarred side of her face against her side, right above her hip. She'll always start out sleeping restlessly, but her face will even out in dreaming.
Pomni will often reach out, to cup the back of her head with her hand, run her fingers through her hair, and stare at her peaceful, unguarded expression — and she'll think, selfishly, just to herself, I wish I knew your name.
(or: jax coming back from abstraction doesn't automatically fix everything. pomni struggles to reckon with it.)

Summary
"We were so worried, we heard you—" Ragatha starts, and then looks up. She meets Jax's gaze dead-on, and goes silent. Tears brim in the corner of her eye. Her hand flies up to cover her mouth. He can't tell if the look on her face is relief or fear.
Gangle's staring at him like she's seen a ghost. Pomni slowly raises to her feet, brows furrowed. She winces as every movement jars her wavering form.
Cowered on the floor, panting, confused and disoriented, with everyone standing above him, taller than him… it reminds Jax of something deeply unpleasant. They're all staring at him. They're all seeing him.
Jax knows they're not going to like what they see.
His breath quickens until his head is spinning, and he feels like he's going to vomit. He forces himself upwards with a frustrated cry, swaying in place, and then turns and bolts towards his room as fast as he can.
"NO!" Pomni screams.
(or: pomni pulls jax back from the brink.)

Summary
Jax is gone, but the circus keeps moving.
Adventures still happen. Breakfast is still shared. Caine still dreams up ridiculous ideas, and some afternoons are spent arguing over board games instead of running for their lives.
Pomni isn't sure she's ready for any of it.
As she learns to navigate grief alongside the people who understand it best, she begins to realize that healing isn't something anyone has to do alone. And without either of them noticing, the quiet comfort she finds in Ragatha slowly starts to become something neither of them has words for.

With the theory of Abstraction reversal now proven, the Circus crew can move onto regaining the rest of their lost members and bringing everyone back once and for all. Yet, no one ever said such a task wouldn’t be arduous - or, for one particular froggy case, downright shattering.
For Jax, the whole ordeal becomes a test of resilience and persistence as he faces the absolute worst parts of himself in a desperate attempt to reach the person who had mattered to him most. Failing was not an option.
But, just how many times can someone be broken, before they can’t put themselves back together the same way anymore? And… whoever said that was necessarily a bad thing?

Summary
“I'm great at playin’ with balls, if you know what I mean.” Evil Pomni continues, cupping her hands in front of her chest. She then makes a crude squeezing motion that causes Pomni to grimace. She doesn't particularly want to fight her in front of Ragatha but she swears, she's about two seconds away from ripping her stupid head off.
“We're… kind of in the middle of something, here?” Ragatha says, although it sounds more like a question than a statement. Her face is a little flushed, too, and Pomni hopes that's due to embarrassment and not anything else. Please, please don't let it be anything else.

Abstraction wasn’t unstoppable immediately. It didn’t break you all at once without notice, it grew and grew, from within until it reached the surface. Once in full effect it was irreversible, but like all things that grow, it could be cut short before it blooms.

What if Pomni had pried a little more? What if Jax had managed to hold on just a little longer? What if that made all the difference?

Jax wakes up after a long, long time, a bit the worse for wear.
On the one hand, she experienced ego death, is tired and hurting all the time, and cries like a faucet now.
On the other, she's too exhausted to bother with her old bluster, has accepted that she wasn't subtle at all about her gender woes, and is genuinely galaxies happier than she used to be.
But even so...an old question begins to nag at her.
