“Me too,” Henry says.
“We have a lot in common,” Gnarly says, but doesn’t elaborate, not one for more words than strictly necessary to bring about his point. He scrapes a thin shaving of pale wood off the block in his hand, a curl that falls to the ground and reminds Henry of Hans’s hair after a bath.
After his terrible fall, daydreams of Hans blend with the memory of their fight at the pillory, and Lord Semine and his guard captain begin to look a little familiar to Henry’s hazy mind.

A lurch in his stomach, like the moment of dark surprise when he misses a step going down the stairs. It soon turns into a gnawing sensation, a memory of hunger that seems to be there always, although Hans has since always had enough to eat. Hunger for touch. For Henry. For their desperate fumbling in his borrowed bed in the fortress. For more time together, despite the busy days that followed them in the Kuttenberg region after the siege, and then returning home to plan this, their great escape, their last chance.
Rattay, Vienna, Sofia, Constantinople, Alexandria, Jerusalem. Hans and Henry on pilgrimage to the Holy Land on borrowed time, through six cities, in six states of sin and sanctity.

Erik’s striking eyes, dark as the void yet clouded with the warmth of honeyed mead, still betrayed his ever-present awareness. His broad frame, even when slightly hunched from the grueling hours of battle and travel, somehow seemed almost regal in the flickering firelight.
As subtly as he possibly could, Ištván nodded towards the stairs, leaving his fine wine half-finished.
Knowing all too well that his Erik would soon follow.

It is the final day of the siege of Suchdol. Judgement Day, some would call it later on. The Praguers' camp had been razed to the ground by reinforcements arriving from Rattay: with Markvart dead, the rest of their forces flee.
Yet, despite being taken back, no victorious hymns echo through the fort. Mortal silence falls upon them: in the heart of the inner courtyard, Sir Hans Capon of Pirkstein kneels, unmoving, on the blood-soaked ground. No words reach him—no hands are strong enough to pull him away. Those who try to approach him cross themselves: the young lord is blind to the world.
It is only Father Godwin’s prayer that breaks through; his palms shaking, spread over Hans’ head: Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificetur nomen tuum; adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua.
Fiat voluntas tua, he repeats, and waits.
Sicut in cælo et in terra, Hans finishes, his voice breaking. He raises his eyes for the briefest moment—as Godwin kneels down to gently pry his hands away.
Henry’s body in his arms is already cold.

But, of course, the blasted Hero of Baldur's Gate won't let him die. After saving him yet again, Tav asks him to become her personal bodyguard against the alarming number of assassins hellbent on killing her.
He knows it's her own way of helping him feel less ashamed- to give him a chance to pay off the life debts he owes her. And the chance of piecing together his own honor once more is alluring.
