Ryland’s whiteboard has cycled through a couple different phases. First, it held his scattered inventory of memories. Then, calculations charting the path to Rocky. And now, having saved Rocky, columns of figures devoted to rationing food for the journey to Erid.
Near the bottom corner, circled three separate times, are the words: WE WILL MAKE IT :)
Well, you learn that there is a special kind of hell reserved for the first person to discover a problem, because now, even four words scrawled across a whiteboard can mock you. You see, here’s the problem you’ve found: Turns out there isn’t enough food on the Hail Mary for both of you to make it to Erid alive after all.

OR: The Hail Mary has enough food to get one person to Erid. Unfortunately, there are two of you. And worse, you’re in love.

Everything on Sacred Erid has been wrong ever since that... thing! arrived with Saviour Rocky. Everyone is going around celebrating like the end of the world is now over. Don't get me wrong, I am also glad that the Astrophage crisis was averted, but that does not mean we should be celebrating it with that sorry excuse of an intelligent form of life. No, we eridians have time and time again shown ourselves superior above all else. The fact alone that Saviour Rocky had to help bring it here only reinforces that statement.
And now they think of building it a home here. How... how dare they, they're willing to sacrifice a part of Sacred Erid just to let this semi-mobile object be somewhat content? Everything about the environment wants to kill them, and everything about it is so wrong. It does not deserve to exist on our surface. From the moment they made contact I knew we would have to find a way to get rid of it, even if I have to look up everything there is to know about it, I'll find a way, there's always a way.
Fortunately, it appears I'm not alone.

Director Stratt and Dr. Grace are walking quickly across the flight deck, Carl easily keeping pace behind them. Willis and Mar share an amused look across the fuel line. Dr. Grace is flying to Australia within the hour to attend an Atrophage summit in Sydney. He is, of course, the keynote speaker. And he wants to take Carl.
“His name is on the paper! He was instrumental to the process! Pleeease pleasepleaseplease please let me take Carl.”
