It wasn't the easiest, but with the help of his brother Sodapop and his best friend Johnny Cade, he could usually figure out anything. Why did his love life need to be any different? Ponyboy just held him as they cried. He held him like Soda had held him the day they had found him lying in the lot. And Johnny hated Ponyboy for that.
Because it reminded him of how amazing Pony was, how comforting and sweet and pretty he was. How much he cared for everyone, for Johnny. How he empathised with anyone and how much it hurt to see him hurt and how happy it was to see him happy and how sad it was to see him sad.
He hated it because it felt like love.
That was wrong. Johnny wasn't allowed to love him. But he did. And God, did it make his heart soar and break at the same time.
Because as bad as he wants to kiss him and hold his hand and talk to him everyday...
He couldn't ever have him.
That might hurt the most.

Summary
Johnny thought everyone would be better off without him, he was a burden anyway. Who would want someone like him? He was surprised when he woke up after overdosing, Ponyboy next to him with tears running down his cheeks. He didn't understand what was happening, and in his moment of disorientation, he said something that changed his and Pony's relationship.
Something that would make bets be won and lost, have Ponyboy questioning everything, and him left a mess with his thoughts.

Dallas Winston is trouble in a leather jacket, sharp tongued, guarded, and far too observant. You try to keep your distance. He does not.
What begins as wary glances and uneasy proximity turns into late nights, quiet defiance, and moments of safety you did not know you were missing.
In a town divided by lines you were never meant to cross, you learn that staying can be its own kind of rebellion, and that some people are worth choosing, even when you are afraid to.
