The hospital really is the worst part of it.
Jason doesn’t know where he is when he wakes up. Blinding lights, too many noises, tubes in his nose and throat and wires everywhere. It’s fucking terrifying. Someone says his name, he doesn’t understand anything else. At least not for a while.
The nurses are nice–well, the ones that aren’t strictly business anyways. And Dick is there. The first time Jason sees him is about the second or third time he wakes up–maybe the first really meaningful time. He tries to pull his tracheal tube out, but Dick stops him with a hand on his wrist. Just the sight of him–albeit with bandages and stitches on his forehead–is enough to make Jason burst into tears in sheer relief.Series

With all of that settled, he heaves himself off the exam table where he had been sitting, ready to go home and press an ice pack to his head. Of course, that’s when she decides to mention one last thing.
“Oh, and you’ll need someone to drive you home afterwards.”

Tentatively, keeping the boy inside her peripheral view, she takes hold of the spoon, dips it into the odd-looking food that’s stuck between blood and not-blood, and lifts it to her lips. Swallows.
Bad.
It tastes awful. Years of training and self-restraint are all that keep her from spitting it out and throwing the utensil across the room like it’s something poisonous, something that’s going to harm her. But the kid—Tim, she reminds herself, tongue unconsciously moving as she sounds the word out to herself in her head—is just so… expectant. It bleeds into his entire demeanor.
She doesn’t like the biting bits—the little black specks that crunch between her teeth, making her tongue feel funny. She doesn’t like how watery yet paste-like its consistency is, her toes curling, feeling a chill that won’t come wanting to crawl down her spine. It hardly tastes like anything, and therefore, it tastes gross.
It tastes like nothing, and to be honest, it’s kind of disgusting, but it’s the best thing she’s had in—forever, she thinks. It’s warm.
