Summary
“I’m not done,” Maddie shushed him. “It’s not his fault that Theo attached himself to Eddie. He’s a kid who lost both of his parents, things aren’t going to be linear, you need to give them both a break. And besides that, loving Eddie Diaz is a Buckley gene,”
What?
A Buckley gene? What did Maddie mean by that?
“What? Um— What do you mean by that?” Buck stumbled over his words.
“You’re not shy from loving Eddie Diaz, of course your kid— your genes— would love him just the same as you do. Regardless if it’s romantic or platonic,” Maddie laughed.

Summary
Buck groans into the kiss, his hands sliding down to grip Eddie’s hips, pulling him impossibly closer, his resolve crumbling instantly. “You're gonna make us late,” Buck manages when they pull apart for a second.
Eddie smiles against his mouth. “You don't sound very upset about it.”
“I'm trying to be responsible,” Buck insists, though his fingers are already slipping under the shirt to run along Eddie’s back.
“Mm-hm.” Eddie presses another kiss to Buck’s mouth, then another to his jaw. “And how’s that working out for you?”

"What?" Buck rolls his shoulders back, posture stiffening.
"You told Maddie that you could understand Tommy being threatened by what we have," Eddie says slowly. "So I just wondered what that is?"

Summary
Buck shot him a watery smile. “Chris is the one that kept me going, if we’re being honest. If it wasn’t for that kid and his spirit, I think I would’ve crawled into that bed and died with you.”
The admission settled over them, heavy like the air after a storm. Eddie felt his expression fall. Buck’s eyebrows furrowed as he dropped his gaze to the table. He tried to pull his hand out of Eddie’s, but Eddie just tightened his grip.
“Baby,” he whispered.
Buck sniffled. “I guess I should probably think about going back to therapy, huh?”

“I think it might be time for you to go.”
“What—why?” Buck asked.
“You’re a freshman, Buck,” Eddie accentuated the syllables of his name. “You shouldn’t really be here.”
“I have just as much a right to be here as you do.” Buck argued, adjusting himself so he was standing up perfectly straight. Making himself bigger. He was taller than Eddie, he noticed.
So why did he still feel so small standing next to him?

Summary
It’s been one week, two days, and twenty hours since Eddie told Buck he was in love with him.
It happened a few feet from where Buck’s standing now, just a little further to the left of the coffee table, and in front of the lamp. Since that day, he finds himself drifting there on cue, feet dragging to the spot before his mind catches up.
He’s staring at the spot, he realizes, and tears his eyes away.
It’s been one week, two days, twenty hours (and roughly seventeen minutes) since Eddie told Buck he was in love with him, and now he’s sitting on his couch helping Buck decide on a shirt for his date.
A date that’s not with Eddie, because when Eddie told him he loved him, Buck didn’t say it back. Because he isn’t. In love with Eddie, that is.

Summary
Footsteps approach him and he tenses.
"Buck."
He doesn't have to turn around to know who it is. Eddie's voice is much deeper than it was when they were teenagers but Buck can recognize it anywhere.
"Edmundo," Buck replies curtly, briefly glancing at him as he sidles up next to him. Eddie's frustrated sigh in response makes his lip twitch up on one side in satisfaction.
"Just wanted to see if this," Eddie gestures between them. "Was going to be a problem."
"Nope," Buck pops the 'p' in the word a bit louder than necessary. "No problem here, man."
"Good," Eddie responds, folding his arms. "No problem here either."
They are both liars it seems.

Summary
Theo plops himself onto the closed toilet seat, drowning in his Spider-Man robe while Eddie blow-dries his hair. He leans his face into Eddie’s stomach, humming to himself and fiddling with one of his bath toys that he’d rescued before being plucked from the water. The tub slowly drains, the bathroom is humid and nice-smelling, and there’s the weight of a toddler against him. Eddie isn’t just falling asleep, he can feel the stress of the day melting away.
He sighs. Theo tips his chin to look at him and sighs back, flaring his nostrils like they’re two tigers communicating in chuffs.
“I’m happy that you’re here, Eddie.”
“Yeah,” Eddie says. He aims the blow dryer down the back of Theo’s robe, making him giggle. “Me too, kiddo.”

“The storm keeping you up?”
“Yeah, I just- I can’t get out of my head.”
Buck hums, his thumbs rubbing a soothing pattern on his ribcage. “Do you wanna talk about it?”
Most nights, the answer to that question is no, but Buck never fails to ask it. It makes Eddie’s veins feel like there’s honey flowing through them every time just knowing that Buck is always there for him on Eddie’s terms. God, he loves this man.
“No,” he shakes his head and leans back into the warmth of his boyfriend's arms, setting his mug aside. “The flashbacks aren’t bad they just… won’t go away.”
“Want me to be quiet, or do you want me to distract you?”
“Distract me,” he says without a second of hesitation. “I just need my brain to turn off.”

Hold on…
If Buck sent a photo of him and Eddie to Tommy, that meant…
Buck nearly dropped his phone scrambling to open his and Eddie’s text thread – and, well, much to his own demise, he had sent a photo of himself, naked from the waist down and sprawled across his sheets, hard as a rock. He’d sent a photo of his cock to Eddie. Eddie Diaz, his best friend.
Fuck. Okay, wow. There was no coming back from that.

Summary
“What the fuck, Buck. Look at us! We don’t do this, man. You can’t just up and leave after things get hard!” Eddie wasn’t sure how to stop being angry, how to not put everything on Buck, but his best friend leaving sure wasn’t helping.
“Oh, but you can?” Buck snarled and Eddie looked at him in disbelief.
“You…No. We’ve been over this. I know that you don’t think that I…” Eddie was lost for words but Buck quickly started speaking instead.
“That you what, Eddie? That you didn’t leave? That you haven’t changed? That we haven’t changed? Because we sure as hell did. And El Paso wasn’t the first time you did it. It is your fucking thing."
Or
In the midst of their grief, Buck and Eddie fell out of their usual rhythm and went into two completely different directions. After a fight that took way too much from both of them and after the news that Eddie and Chris were staying in LA, Buck decided to move out and leave this thing between him and Eddie behind.

Summary
Eddie Diaz has spent years pretending to fall in love.
It is part of the job, after all. He has stood beneath golden lights and looked into another actor’s eyes until the entire world believed he was hopelessly devoted. He has kissed beneath artificial rain, whispered confessions written by someone else, smiled through scenes designed to make millions of people believe in soulmates. He has played men who fall in love slowly, men who fall desperately, men who take one look at someone and somehow understand that their life has just changed forever.
Eddie has always thought he understood the feeling. That he understood what falling in love will feel like.
He doesn’t. Not until tonight

"What?" Eddie mumbles, mouth full, brown eyes wide and questioning. He slowly pulls the popsicle out of his mouth, tongue darting out to swipe up a stray droplet before it can run down his chin.
"Nothing." Buck clears his throat and sits up a little straighter. He needs to get a grip.
"It's a good popsicle," Eddie offers, his bottom lip jutting out defensively.
"Okay." Buck nods. He looks away again. He wonders if he's being homophobic.

Eddie continues watching as the large man walks over towards him and Bobby. When he approaches, he stops in his tracks, puts his hand on his obnoxious belt buckle that says “BUCK.” The man’s gaze lingers on Eddie’s feet before looking at Bobby. “This the new ranch hand?”
“Eddie Diaz,” Bobby introduces. “Came all the way from El Paso, Texas.”
“What’s a city boy like you doing all the way out here?” The man asks.
Eddie crosses his arms, with the sudden urge to present himself as worthy. “Wanted to try something new. So here we are.”

Summary
“What are you looking at, Eddie?” As soon as the words leave his mouth he realizes just how flirty he sounds, but he can’t stop himself from continuing on, “Oh sorry none of my business, privacy of your own home and I, I respect that, but–”
Eddie realizes what he’s doing a second too late, leaping forward to try and stop him. Buck reaches down to grab the ipad, flips it over, and then nearly drops it to the floor. It feels like slow motion the way his hands have started to tremble and he struggles for a second to lock it—his own startled reflection staring back at him from the black screen once he finally does.
Eddie’s there seconds later, jerking the tablet out of his grip. He clutches it to his chest. They both stare at one another, for the first time in their friendship at a complete and total loss for words.
It’s silent, just the sound of the fridge humming in the background. Buck’s own heartbeat thunders loudly in his ears. Eddie’s gaze has dropped down to the floor and he’s refusing to meet Buck’s eye anymore.
or,
Buck flips the ipad and finds it open to Grindr—specifically, to the dick pic he'd sent to a headless torso with great abs an hour ago.

Summary
“He spent my whole life drilling into me that I had to be hard. Strong. Untouchable. No softness. No affection. Every time I reached for it, he tore me down. Called me weak. Pathetic. Wrong. And I thought I buried that when I left home. I thought I left him behind. But he’s still here.” Eddie taps his temple with trembling fingers, breath catching in his chest. “He’s still in my head. And every time someone notices us, every time there’s even a hint of attention, I hear him again, telling me I’m not allowed to want.”
“But I do want. God, Buck, I want you so much it terrifies me. I want to touch you all the time. I feel this need in me, it’s bottomless. Like a pit I can’t fill, no matter what I do. And it scares the hell out of me, because if I open it all the way, if I let it out, I don’t know if it will ever be enough. And I’m terrified you’ll drown in it. That I’ll smother you. That you’ll get overwhelmed and leave.”
or, Eddie Diaz has never let himself be needy, not once in his life. But loving Buck makes him ache for touch in ways he can’t admit, until pulling away nearly breaks them both.

Summary
Eddie meets Evan in the summer of 2010 by a lake in El Paso. Both of them still teenagers, lost in life, and a little lonely. It only takes a smile and a sympathetic ear for the two to become inseparable and promise each other forever.
Eddie meets Buck in the fall of 2018 at a fire station in Los Angeles. It takes more than a smile and an explanation to forgive broken promises, fix broken hearts, rebuild trust and find a way to be a family again.
------------
Bobby is now in front of him introducing him to some of the other firefighters, but Eddie can hardly hear whatever it is they’re saying because he can’t take his eyes off the man standing like a statue a few feet away, with wide deer-caught-in-the-headlights-eyes, open mouth, and white as a sheet of paper. The man who abandoned him and his son three years ago. The man who is still the love of his goddamn life. Captain Nash is waving him over, and Evan finally starts moving, slow and clumsy, like a zombie.
“Eddie, this is Buck. Buck meet Eddie Diaz,” Bobby says.
“Buck?” Eddie asks dumbfounded, still not believing what is happening.
