It's the late fall of 2015, and the Rockford University Peaches' softball season has finally come to a close with a division championship win. It doesn't mean much compared to a win in the spring, but it means the world to the seniors of the team. One senior in particular being shortstop Jess McCready.
As much as she loves playing ball, the break between now and spring training gives her time to focus on cleaning out the gen-eds she's put off for too long, and even more time to give to her pride and joy: her weekly radio show, WLEZ.
But without endless practices, scrimmages, and games to occupy most of her time, Jess' thoughts start to drift off, thinking about anything and everything under the cooling Illinois sun. Her brain's filled with new song lyrics, ideas of ways to redecorate the radio station, and...

“Have you slept at all? It’s nearly morning,” Harrow said, almost exasperated, but more worried than anything else. Gross.
Gideon made another noncommittal noise. Harrow placed a hand on her shoulder; it was only then that she turned around to look at the other girl. Harrow’s face was unpainted– it was more and more these days, Gideon was too nervous to ask why– and her hair was unbrushed. She looked as if she had just woken up, which, of course, she had.
Gideon looked at her eyes last, because she always did. It was still strange, her own eyes in Harrow’s face. It was even stranger to look in the mirror and see Harrow’s black eyes looking back at her. It was a good kind of strange, though. It was a reminder of what she would never, not in her entire life, forget– that she was a part of Harrow now, and Harrow was a part of her. More simply, that she was Harrow’s, and Harrow was hers.
“Come back to bed, beloved," Harrow said, and Gideon couldn’t have argued with her if she wanted to.

Every December, employees of Canaan Mall are selected at random to serve as Santa's elves. This year, Hot Topic employee Harrowhark is one of the unlucky winners. And that's not all - the awful Abercrombie model from across the hall is playing Santa. As the countdown to Christmas begins, Harrow fights whiny children, impatient parents, and worst of all, the attentions of the hottest Santa the world has ever seen.
“How do you do it?”
“Do what? Look this good? Maintain such a chiseled physique? Some people will tell you it’s 80% diet, 20% exercise, but what I’ve learned is—”
“No, you insufferable dingbat. How do you do…this?” Harrow gestures at the tree, the big Santa chair, the velvet carpet that will soon be filled once again with people eager to meet Santa. “All the holly jolly Santa shit.”
“Ah. Well, my dear, let me explain. Here, sit on my lap.”
“I think you know that I will do no such thing.”
Gideon shrugs. “Worth a shot. First of all, you’re as cuddly as a cactus, as charming as an eel, a bad banana with a greasy black peel.”

Summary
Gideon didn’t regret pushing Harrow out of the way of the oncoming pickup truck. Obviously, it would have sucked to see the nunlet flattened and shattered like a stepped-on Pringle. She did definitely regret getting hit by the car herself, even if she was not so much the Pringle as Harrow might’ve been. Breaking both legs in different places, vividly colorful bruising all down one side of the body, two cracked ribs and a big concussion – and, of course, the coma. Out for two and a half weeks, or 17 days, or just long enough for, apparently, the entire social dynamic of her life to change. Go figure.
Gideon wakes up from a coma and believes that Harrow and Palamedes have started dating. What the fuck?

She was feeling an emotion that was not fear—Gideon’s pride would never recover if she admitted to being scared of a baby, and especially her own infant self. There was nothing the baby could do to her except give her the heebie-jeebies with her tiny fingernails, and surely Gideon couldn’t accidentally do anything too bad to the baby: precedent suggested that Little Gideons survive to adulthood, no matter the odds, and this Little Gideon had already survived much worse than being held. Maybe it was disbelief gnawing at her; it felt wrong that her infancy still existed in some place and time, like maybe she thought that her death had unraveled her whole life, all the way back to the baby called Bomb.
The air held a chill that made her teeth hurt. “That,” she said, shifting Little Gideon sickly to her other shoulder, “was a shitty thing to call a kid.”

“It’s not a well ordered society.” Gideon knew where that was going, and she certainly didn’t have the time. She slapped a slip of paper onto the counter and said, “It’s secret santa.”
And there lay the source of all of her problems: handwritten in a script so neat and precise it could have been printed, Harrowhark Nonagesimus. And everyone knew that Gideon and Harrow hated each other.
So what if they had started taking smoke breaks together? So what if Harrow had helped her fold shirts just last week, in a store she didn’t even work in? So what if Harrow had laughed as the two of them did Jagerbombs at Palamedes’ Halloween party, the glint of her fake fangs flashing invitingly in the orange party lights? They hated each other. The two of them would both work in the mall until one of them inevitably strangled the other with her bare hands, and Gideon wouldn’t have it any other way.
Except that lately, Gideon had started to like Harrow.
Which made that slip of paper a fucking problem.

Growing up in the Ninth, Gideon Nav had thought she knew two things for certain: 1. Harrowhark Nonagesimus was a stone-hearted bitch, and 2. Harrowhark Nonagesimus did not cry. Probably physically couldn’t. Most likely she’d willed herself to be born without lacrimal glands, out of pure spite.
Both of those certainties were being thoroughly flipped on their head by that very same Harrowhark Nonagesimus sobbing into Gideon’s chest.
Harrowhark. Nonagesimus. Was. Sobbing. Into. Her. Chest. (No, saying it more slowly in her head didn’t make it any less weird.)
Gideon had an entire lifetime worth of experience with handling an angry Harrow. She could’ve dealt with that. But how was she supposed to deal with… whatever the fuck this was?Or: Gideon accidentally makes Harrow cry with a badly chosen joke, and everything that follows.
