Summary
There is merit to the old wives' tale that firebenders rise with the sun. One might assume that this creates excess bustle in major cities at dawn’s first light, but as the previously war-torn world begins to relax back to the way the world should be there is a new sense of quiet that falls over the Fire Nation in the morning. As the sun peeks out over the horizon of eastern Caldera City every firebender from young to old opens their eyes. And in the Fire Lord’s room, he does the same, basking in the stillness of his nation slowly awakening and preparing for the day. All breathing and being together. The momentary pause before everyone goes their separate ways.
Zuko turned toward the rising sun and toward his moon. The early morning light shone through Sokka’s brown hair igniting a golden halo around his sleeping husband. Sokka lay splayed across his pillow, breath lightly ghosting along the firebenders palm as he reached for a piece of hair obstructing Sokka’s face.

“Let’s start with name, class year, pronouns if you’d like, and … if you were a coffee, what drink you would be. Don’t think about it too hard!” Suki’s gaze lands on Zuko. Zuko is going to die and haunt Ty Lee from the afterlife forever. “Why don’t we start with you?”
Zuko looks at the other four new employees, who now don’t really have a reason to politely avoid glancing at his scar. “Uh. Zuko, here,” he begins, his hand raising in an awkward wave that he immediately snaps down to his side. “I’m a transfer student. Um, second semester sophomore, I guess. And I’d be … drip coffee. Black.”
He blinks. Five sets of eyes blink back at him.

When Zuko transfers schools halfway through his undergrad years, Ty Lee convinces him to work at the same student-run cafe as her. He expects to do his job, get to know a couple coworkers, and maybe memorize some of the regulars’ orders. What he doesn’t expect is the physics major with endless conversation and a concerning penchant for red eyes.

Kya stumbles on a cute little plant shop and its even cuter owner, Lin Beifong. Week after week, she comes in and buys a new photosynthetic friend for her apartment. Her crush on Lin is flourishing, but her plants are pretty much all dead.

“Fascinating,” Kya tells her. “You’re incredibly knowledgeable about this.”
“I’ve been doing this a long time,” Lin says simply.
“Well, ‘cactus’ makes perfect,” Kya blurts out instinctively, immediately wanting to kick herself. Of course she had to get the “bad puns” gene from Uncle Sokka, and naturally it would make an occurrence at the worst possible time.
Lin stares at her for a moment, wide-eyed and skeptical, and Kya feels her cheeks turning red. She’s pondering setting down the cactus and making a run for it and possibly never opening her mouth in front of an attractive woman ever again, but then Lin lets out an undignified snort and shakes her head. “You’re ridiculous,” she tells Kya, her mouth twisting as if she’s trying not to show her amusement.

Zuko never listened. But the problem with Azula was that she always listened, and analyzed, and took everything so literally that she was a traitor to her own brother. It had taken her years to realize she was wrong.
And Azula began to cry.
