“I’m thinking no,” Calum says with an easy smile, feeling the warmth of Luke’s gaze on the side of his face. “This whole thing still feels a little fake, you know? Might as well lean in.”
“It does feel fake,” Luke agrees, the low, soft rasp of his voice like a balm smoothing over Calum’s unspoken anxieties, the ones he doesn’t even fully admit to himself. “I think maybe that’s just the Perseids, though. It seems impossible that the sky could ever look like this, so anything that happens while it does can only be a dream.”

“Does that really matter?” Luke asks quietly, eyelashes fluttering as he looks back down at Moon Landing.
Calum can tell he wants the answer to be yes. Calum can also tell he doesn’t believe the answer could ever be yes.
It’s an impossible question to answer. Yes means a future with Luke. He can’t commit to that, can’t get Luke’s hopes up. But no means a future without Luke, and the simple thought of that makes his stomach churn. He doesn’t want that to be his reality.
So he tries to be as honest as he can be. “It might matter.”
