"We were so worried, we heard you—" Ragatha starts, and then looks up. She meets Jax's gaze dead-on, and goes silent. Tears brim in the corner of her eye. Her hand flies up to cover her mouth. He can't tell if the look on her face is relief or fear.
Gangle's staring at him like she's seen a ghost. Pomni slowly raises to her feet, brows furrowed. She winces as every movement jars her wavering form.
Cowered on the floor, panting, confused and disoriented, with everyone standing above him, taller than him… it reminds Jax of something deeply unpleasant. They're all staring at him. They're all seeing him.
Jax knows they're not going to like what they see.
His breath quickens until his head is spinning, and he feels like he's going to vomit. He forces himself upwards with a frustrated cry, swaying in place, and then turns and bolts towards his room as fast as he can.
"NO!" Pomni screams.

She was a pretty empty headed doll always glad to see his majesty. Clumsy but adorable enough that it was easy to blame everyone else for putting her in a position that caused her to blunder.
Mean, yes, but anyone would be in her position, she reasoned. The empress didn't understand, she never had to be mean, she never needed to. No, the people here were just mean for fun, because they happened to be born in wealth and status and used that as an excuse to kick down. Nobody ever stopped them, why would they? The commoners didn't have power and the nobles all agreed that this was how it was supposed to be. Sure, maybe it wasn't right but what were they going to do? Limit themselves? They would rather die.
A bunch of peacocks all reassuring themselves that they were special, that they were better than those filthy commoners, labouring away on their fields and in their dank shops so the lords and ladies could afford the finest silks.
___Or, Rashta but I don't ignore the slavery in the story.

That is how you've lived through all this time. You know how this story goes. And with that knowledge, you pointedly try to avoid any chance to get involved by all of the main characters of this world as best as you can, no matter how nice it would be to know them personally.
It was something you forbade yourself to do. The results of changing the plot was one thing- your own reactions are another. God knows you'll go insane if you actually meet them face on. You're already hanging on a thread just trying to survive.
...But really, you should've known Cale Henituse would be too smart and dedicated to his slacker life to look the other way.
