It’d been touch and go, Andy told him when Robert finally picked up the phone, but he’d made it. There hadn't been much else to say given the resentment still clinging to them at the time, but Robert had taken annual leave and headed back to Emmerdale, sat around the kitchen table as Vic cried on his shoulder and Diane fussed and Annie called from a bad connection in Spain, and braved himself to see his dad for the first time in three years.
In typical Jack Sugden fashion, he’d barely reacted to Robert’s presence, taking it as a given, and Robert had bitten his tongue and tried not to scream.

Robert moves closer so the two of them are practically toe-to-toe. A tingle spreads from Aaron’s neck to his hip.
“Invite me there instead, then,” Robert says smoothly.Aaron instinctively steps backwards, his back hitting the portacabin door. He can’t deal with this right now; it’s not how they work. They don’t do flirting in broad daylight. They barely interact when there isn’t some sort of event (and booze) dragging them together.

The audience all begin to clap like seals in some kind of waterpark show in Tenerife, and Aaron rolls his eyes and joins in too when Mack elbows him in the ribs and nods in the direction of Nicola from HR, who is frowning at him from across the room with beady eyes. Aaron sighs through his nose and turns his gaze back towards the front, raises an eyebrow in curiosity when he sees the twitch of unease in Robert’s almost photoshoot perfect grin as he takes Lawrence’s hand and squeezes tight.
“I give it six months before he’s caught shagging one of the salesgirls over his desk.” Mack murmurs to him from the corner of his mouth; Aaron snorts and tilts his head in further towards him.
“Bet you a tenner it’s five.”
