Clark swallows, then takes a tentative step forward, then another. Soon, he’s standing right in front of it, his heart pounding in his chest.
He takes a breath, then looks into the crib.
His stomach drops again.
“Oh.”
“I’m so sorry,” Lena says quietly. Her voice shakes a little.
Clark doesn’t reply. His eyes are locked on what’s in the crib, taking in the round cheeks, the small fists, the thick, dark hair.
He doesn’t need to breathe, technically, but he feels like all the oxygen in his lungs has been stolen anyway.
After what feels like an eternity, they scrunch up their face, wiggle a little, yawn, and then slowly open their eyes.
Blue.
Bright, otherworldly blue eyes, just like his own, stare back at him.

Until that meathead boy, son of that skinhead senator, butts in. Christine Daae is out of money, out of parents, and out of hope. It's hard to pay for college and medical debts that were never yours when you work at a Waffle House. When she runs into her creepy neighbor at a bar, she discovers a chance to earn money using the best gift her parents gave her: her voice.
