Summary
The first time that the plague bells rang out in Ketterdam, Kaz had ended up beating his brother’s rotting corpse until it was completely dead, then using the remains to float ashore. Even after all that, Jordie managed to get the last laugh. Kaz was bitten. He spent the days on the street, starving, sick and alone, waiting for the virus to reach his brain just like everyone else. But it didn’t.
That time, the plague had been contained to Ketterdam. Thousands died, but the spread eventually ended. Once they were sure all of the victims had been destroyed, and burnt, and nobody else was sick, things began to go back to normal. Slowly, people returned to the streets and Kaz realised he wasn’t going to die. Not then, at least. Not from the plague. Any other potential deaths were still quite readily possible.
The second time that the plague bells rang out in Ketterdam, Kaz Brekker would realise that there were many other ways to die in the Zombie Apocalypse.Or,

“Is everything quite all right, Miss Ghafa?”
“Yes, yes everything’s fine,” she replies. With a deep breath, she turns her gaze out to the window, her cool fingers ghosting her warm cheek. She feels, rather than sees, Brekker grow still. She even senses his hands folding over his can. He always cuts quite a foreboding image in his all-black ensembles, making students and staff shrink in his presence. Here though, in this empty room, he’s a very different kind of chilling. Inej can wrap herself as tight as she can, but it doesn’t stop the feeling of Brekker seeing past her defenses, right through to the humiliation swelling inside her chest.
There’s a long, long pause, and then Brekker says quietly, “You don’t look fine.”

Inej Ghafa escaped the slavers who kidnapped her and fought her way up through the Ketterdam gangs to become the Wraith, the feared leader of the Dregs. Kaz Brekker was not so lucky and has been the Kerch crow at Tante Heleen's Menagerie for the last five years. When a spot of pickpocketing leads to a chance meeting, Inej realizes she could have found the crew member she's needed all along. She just needs to get Kaz out of his indenture and Tante Heleen won't let him go without a fight. To make matters even tougher, Kaz won't leave behind the other Kerch crow at the Menagerie - Wylan Van Eck.
I was inspired by both 'Fool Me Twice' by Corantien and 'We are not mountains' by flourescent_adolescent both of which are AU - Character Swaps of Inej and Kaz and are so damn good. Got me thinking there's not enough of these on here, so I wrote my own.
FYI - Inej still defies the laws of physics and gravity and Kaz still has the limp. Kaz has a slight touch aversion but Tante Heleen has almost successfully beaten it out of him now and it's more to do with just not having a choice in who touches him. Also I really wanted to add more Wylan whump to my other SOC fic and there just wasn't the space, but there is now!
