Dr Cassie McKay slowly approached her 10th year of sobriety, but she felt her mental health slowly deteriorating and the cravings returning. After a particularly triggering shift, something snapped and she found herself on the edge of a relapse. Despite their relationship being strictly friendly coworkers (who secretly have feelings for each other that they've hidden for years), she called Dana Evans in the middle of the night to intervene. Dana was able to save Cassie from her worst impulses, and it changed everything between the two.
Cassie and Dana try to figure out what their relationship means through recovery, mental health crises, and learning to be who you really are later in life.

Cassie hurries to catch up to her, falling in line for a second so that she doesn't startle Dana before she gently takes her by the elbow, urging her to turn down the opposite hall she was heading for. "Let's go this way," she suggests, even though she's really not giving Dana much room to protest as she steers them around another nurse wheeling a patient.
Dana tries to tug her arm back half-heartedly, grumbling, "For the love of god, McKay, can I please just piss in peace?"

The sudden touch of cold medal against her neck brings home the seriousness of his threat. Tears fall from her eyes as she leans her head back as far as she can to separate the delicate skin protecting her jugular from the gleaming medal of the scalpel wielded by David.
“I may not be a doctor, but I know a cut right here will do you in, am I right?” David asks, his voice dripping in condescension and superiority, as he pushes the blade into her neck, enough for a bead of blood to appear, and all Cassie can do, once again, is nod.
